This system has all the intentions of being fantastic. It is a great system if you have scholarships that are blindly rated or scored, or if you have multiple users with a few scholarships each. However, as a college with hundreds of scholarships that have 200-300 qualified students for each one, it is difficult to have a blind process. Plus, if the university gave our college the ability to edit some things, they would have to give those permissions to every person with a login. Needless to say, the system is not quite equipped for multiple users within one university who all have different editing privileges. However, as cumbersome as it has been to learn and manipulate for our purposes, it has allowed us to award more funds than any year prior due to the ease of having all of the student data in one place.

Rosetta Stone

While there are things that Rosetta Stone could do to help the teachers and district with providing educational data, I have seen a tremendous improvement in many beginning ELLs. This program has given them the confidence to move from silence in the classroom to be able to share their thoughts and demonstrate their grasp of the class material.

Pros

Blackbaud

  • All colleges and universities have differences in the way scholarships are awarded at their schools. AcademicWorks listens to the individual needs of each college/university/scholarship provider and will either add system enhancements or help users to find ways to best utilize the system to meet their needs/requirements.
  • The AcademicWorks help desk is very good about support. They are timely in contact and work to resolve issues quickly and effectively.
  • AcademicWorks has worked closely with our IT Department to ensure that the imports and the system will work efficiently despite changes and updates.
  • Students need to only complete one application to be automatically matched to hundreds of scholarship opportunities. This is a very efficient use of the applicant's time and efforts to apply for scholarships.

Cons

Blackbaud

  • Ability to personalize applications - we serve many companies, and we get requests all the time to use their logo, but we can't do that in AcademicWorks.
  • Selective reviews - some review committees don't want to review specific parts of applications, but we can't pick and choose which questions are reviewable for specific opportunities.

Rosetta Stone

  • My students get furiously angry with the poor quality of voice recognition.
  • The target language structures, scope and sequence of the program is not comprehensible. The program does not offer explanations for how to properly create phrases nor does the program accept varieties of an expression (so you have to be word for word rote in order to be granted credit). For example, the program would not accept equivalent phrases like "On Wednesdays I run" and "I run on Wednesdays" which would be OK in typical communication. Additionally, the program was initially deemed desirable because students could learn at their own pace, but I never really saw take away learning as a result of using Rosetta Stone but instead students were able to mimic sounds and click the "hint" button for answers to get through modules.
  • Students don't find the curriculum particularly engaging, which may not be as much a reflection on the product but rather how it is being used in it's application at my school.
  • It would be nice if it could run in some sort of "lockdown browser" capacity because I find students open various web tabs for music and google translate just to get through the program. They're more worried about completion than the practice toward learning...and the poor speech recognition will pick up utterances that aren't even close to the target phrase while often not accepting genuine attempts at the phrase, so there isn't a lot of fidelity from students to trying to use the program.

    Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is a very comprehensive program with several different components. In truth after an initial orientation by a teacher, students (adults or school children) are able to use the software and navigate through its sections.

    Support Rating

    Blackbaud

I lean on our centralized Foundation for support related to Blackbaud Award Management. However, any time I've had a question they couldn't answer, they were able to get the support quickly and efficiently. I give an 8, versus a 9 or 10, because our centralized office has had some requests in for changes to the system that have not been made. Some parts of the system are not working for our purposes, and we've asked for some changes that should be doable. However, the time it takes to get universal changes made is quite long

    Rosetta Stone

I would have liked to give a 10 but there are some areas where Rosetta Stone could improve that would help those using it in an educational setting. That being said, I have seen such good results in my students that I feel this is a very worthwhile product. One of my biggest fears going into this new school year was that with all the changes being made to the Leaning English Language Programs in the district we might lose Rosetta Stone as a tool for our ELLs. I'm happy to say that the district also saw the value of this program.

    Alternatives Considered

    Blackbaud

Blackbaud Award Management easily integrates with their other softwares but award management is more specific to scholarship and award needs and tracking. RE NXT is moreso for the fundraising and tracking side of things whereas Award Management is for the scholarship side of things. Making sure you're purchasing the right sofware for your needs is important.

    • The help we get from the support team is phenomenal that yearly set up can be done with a few days.
    • For what we get done with it, it is a good investment.
