Blackbaud CRM would be a great tool for larger organizations or higher education institutions with a high quantity of constituents. It is great for organizing a lot of information in a single record. While it would be great for any organization, it may be under-utilized for smaller businesses that don't have repeat customers or constant information streams.

The Raisers Edge

I would recommend that people use The Raisers Edge (RE) as the main depository of information about the organization's constituent base, gifts, pulling queries. I find that the interface is becoming really dated and some features are not user-friendly for fundraisers, but I guess NXT is solving this issue.

  • As an enterprise application, I would like to see additional application administration functionality incorporated as part of the application. A specific example is providing additional functionality to address database maintenance.
  • Additional report development tools to allow users (non technical) to create dynamic reports. Currently you can use MS Report Builder and leverage an adhoc query but believe this can be enhanced further.
  • Surface the Financial Transaction Model to the application further. This would allow users to see revenue changes overtime better when reconciling revenue.

  • The consecutive year report is pre-made however it’s not always the most accurate with years of giving.
  • The NXT version consecutive years of giving is sometimes different then the database years.
  • The dashboard is usually off by a small number as far as donor number accuracy compared to query donor count.

We've covered a lot, but mostly because we are happy with the system overall. There are a few kinks, and sometimes it takes a minute to figure out the right wording to pull a report or the best way to code a new category that we want to track. But Blackbaud is always there to help us, and once things are figured out - they are super simple to replicate. It wouldn't be worth it to switch to a new system and lose of all our information and time put in to mastering the system

RE requires Windows, and in some cases, can be slow. The browser-based version (NXT) is expensive and still limited in functionality. RE is a powerful fundraising database, but doesn't integrate well with other independent school solutions. I would highly recommend RE for any organization who needs a powerful fundraising database, but doesn't have any other major database needs that aren't fulfilled by RE.

it does lots of things well (prospect tracking and event management), some things FANTASTIC (gift records and donations and relationships). It is rigid enough for the database administrator to maintain good clean data, but flexible enought for customization across organizations so specific data can be kept as needed for YOUR specific organization needs.

It is purely dependant on who you reach and speak to. You can call twice in an hour period and get two completely different answers. You can get people who are willing to help, people who just tell you no, or people who have no idea what to do. They need to work harder on training their support people. The chat function works very well for simple questions and is my preferred go-to when seeking help.

Overall the support team is amazing! They were helpful in getting things set up and making changes. It was great to give feedback on the new version and see updates and changes made fairly quickly. These updates made the transition from the database version to the web-based version very smooth and easy.

Training is key. Blackbaud offered the training package prior to implementation and it helped us understand how to build it so that the future use would be appropriate to the operation of the organization. Data conversion stage was also very important. A lot of work must be done before making the final decisions about the data conversion - what data to convert and what to leave out, where certain information was supposed to be placed within RE.

Blackbaud CRM is a great product! We chose this CRM product because it was sold as being fully supported and easy to use. It overshadows some of the smaller CRM products with its vast amount of features. It was a hard choice between this or Salesforce. However, Blackbaud is better suited for the education industry.

Tessitura has a fully integrated ticketing system and the ability to be notified when a donor walks into your space. It is much better at predicting donor behavior because it is able to track full engagement with your organization not just donor-specific engagement such as events and donations. However, Raisers Edge is a better fundraising database and is more nuanced in its ability to track donor specific information.

  • If you go with Blackbaud purchase the extended training package. Your staff will thank you.
  • The mantra is "If it isn't in Blackbaud it doesn't exist" is a contradiction because best practice with Blackbaud is to not use attachments which means we had to archive copies of donor letters or membership in a completely separate system. Really? What is the point? Or pay more and more and more...

  • It takes longer than necessary to do things so that makes it cost more staff time to complete the work we need. One example is with online gifts since you can't import these into a batch we have to manually add all of the online gifts which is time consuming.
