Blackbaud CRM

Complex fundraising - Perfect for hospitals, universities, and large enterprise or multi-site nonprofits. Not an out-of-the-box implementation - Organizations must plan, invest, and dedicate time for implementing this CRM. Budgets should include outside consultants and/or Blackbaud specialists to help in every step.

The Raisers Edge

The Raisers Edge is great for basic functionalities such as tracking and looking up information about donors and gifts. It is also great for people who will not need the database for more than basic tracking or do not have time or capacity for an extended training. For a situation that requires more in-depth analysis or for someone who will spend a lot of time with the system on a daily basis, I might recommend looking elsewhere.

Pros

Blackbaud CRM

  • The user interface is user friendly, intuitive and customizable through security. Reduces the change management obstacle in training.
  • The application is both configurable and customizable. This presents significant benefits in addressing unanticipated needs, once the proper resources, and training are established. Examples are creating custom reports, adding functionality, interfacing with other applications / platforms.
  • Support and application enhancements. Blackbaud support is effective in addressing out of the box functionality and overall supporting customizations as well. Blackbaud's knowledge base and community provide several resources that can be leveraged in support and enhancing the application.

The Raisers Edge

  • Running reports and queries is user friendly and intuitive. It could get complicated to run detailed donor reports however they offer some already created reports you may customize.
  • Blackbaud support is available daily to assist in screen sharing , reports, queries.
  • Raisers' dashboard makes it easy to track new donors, lapsed donors and you could customize what you are looking for in the results.

Cons

Blackbaud CRM

  • The Sales experience is rough. Be prepared. Write everything down. It is rough because if you are new you do not know what to ask for. You have the purchase of the function and the maintenance of the functionality you purchase. It is complicated and tricky. It is also frustrating.
  • Costs are not consistent. Caution...you are on your own to set your limit or what you can pay, If you are not a techy and new or uncomfortable with negotiations you probably should involve others. Make them explain each line item to you. Do not sign until you know you have everything you will need to achieve your goals.
  • There documentation is old school and lacks graphics, workflow and is loaded with text. I would like to use user videos with click through demos.

The Raisers Edge

  • The UX is very old and outdated looking.
  • There are several usability issues like you can't copy certain fields like the ID since it isn't text. You also can't use some of the standard keyboard shortcuts like Ctr+A to select all. These small things can really slow you down when you are working.
  • In order to search you have to select what you are searching for gift, fund, constituent. In other more modern databases like Salesforce you can search across all objects at once which is very helpful. Furthermore, when you are searching certain data can’t be searched on. For example you can’t search on an email address if the individual is logged as a relationship of an organization record
  • When you are querying RE it will often pull duplicate results. If a certain gift or constituent meets more than one criterion it will appear in the query twice. As such, in order to get deduped results you have to run a query through an export or a report so most data sets that you need have to be found in a two step process.
  • You can't add custom fields to RE. Instead you have to rely on attributes in order to add additional information. This works relatively well but it keeps the data segregated onto the attributes tab rather than appearing immediately where you need the information.
  • It is annoying that you can't upload documents and attachments to gifts. Instead, you have to put gift backup onto the media area of the constituent record. This makes it much harder to identify the correct backup document(s) for gifts.
  • This database is extremely expensive. As a nonprofit it's hard to justify the costs.
  • The old versions are not hosted so you have to host them yourself which can be costly and updates are not rolled out automatically. Instead you have to manually update the tool. If there are compatibility issues with the data you have to fix that before upgrading.

We've covered a lot, but mostly because we are happy with the system overall. There are a few kinks, and sometimes it takes a minute to figure out the right wording to pull a report or the best way to code a new category that we want to track. But Blackbaud is always there to help us, and once things are figured out - they are super simple to replicate. It wouldn't be worth it to switch to a new system and lose of all our information and time put in to mastering the system

I only wish that Raisers Edge would sync better with Mac products. It's still mostly for Windows, and requires a lot of maintenance in order to make it easier for Mac. The search engines can be a little easier to navigate as well. There should also be some information already in place, when searching for records.

it does lots of things well (prospect tracking and event management), some things FANTASTIC (gift records and donations and relationships). It is rigid enough for the database administrator to maintain good clean data, but flexible enought for customization across organizations so specific data can be kept as needed for YOUR specific organization needs.

They did not stand behind their product. I had to tell my story/ explain my problem to multiple people, multiple times and in the end the issue that was determined to be a product functionality issue, was never resolved. They company never even apologized for the problem or offered any help in resolving all the issues and lost time it cost us.

Basic support is great. But when I have an issue where I've searched the Knowledgebase and asked other users, it's not helpful to send me to a Knowledgebase article I've already read and realized it doesn't solve my issue.

We had good success with the our implementation of The Raiser's Edge. The user guides, online resources, and Blackbaud support were all very helpful

Alternatives Considered

Blackbaud CRM

Blackbaud CRM is a great product, especially when fully optimized, implemented, and supported. Its many features often dwarf some of the smaller CRM offerings on the market. That said it is a complex product requiring a great deal of training in some situations and not all organizations may fully utilize its vast features.

The Raisers Edge

Tessitura has a fully integrated ticketing system and the ability to be notified when a donor walks into your space. It is much better at predicting donor behavior because it is able to track full engagement with your organization not just donor-specific engagement such as events and donations. However, Raisers Edge is a better fundraising database and is more nuanced in its ability to track donor specific information.

Return on Investment

Blackbaud CRM

  • Decreased open rate in email because we can't figure out how to segment out inactive or soft bounce emails in Blackbaud
  • Mistakenly sent an email with the wrong personalization
  • The whole team can use Blackbaud but only 1-2 people know how to actually use it. Very steep learning curve
Debbie Gillum profile photo

The Raisers Edge

  • Increased ability to segment direct mail pieces and report on specific appeal response.
  • Ability to provide detailed donor reporting to development staff on new, lapsed, and upgraded donors so they can focus their fundraising efforts.
  • Management of a large quantity of membership renewals.
