BMC Remedy Asset Management

Remedy is a solid implementation for an ITIL environment: it processes change tickets, incident tickets very nicely. However, there are a lot of features it lacks: Asset Management, development, batch (bulk/programmatic) actions and UX are severely lacking. The current context I interface with Remedy is in the helpdesk scenario: an End User submits a ticket, that ticket is routed to the appropriate department, I solve the problem, then close that ticket, all from Remedy. However, processes such as Asset Management are wholly unsuitable to the task, in my opinion, and even my Company uses SAP for the bulk of the purchasing management, thus making it necessary to use two tools, instead of having a central system for purchasing and inventory.

Micro Focus Asset Manager

Asset Manager is great for people who understand the Software Development Lifecycle and are familiar with the terminology, however for a new assistant, or a new novice user, the software can seem over-whelming with the rather confusing terminology and a multitude of tabs that open up. It's definitely great software to use for a professional PM, however an assistant would be lost in the tools being offered.

Pros

BMC Remedy Asset Management

  • Remedy is great for housing much of the ITIL process in one System: if you want a complete package with every bell and every whistle, Remedy is for you
  • Remedy breaks down the functions of ITIL into "consoles": separate areas of the System, that allow one to focus on Changes, Incidents, Assets, etc
  • The interface is VERY compatible with legacy web browser tech: The last surviving member of the browser wars is still the favorite for remedy users: IE 11

Micro Focus Asset Manager

  • One place to track, document and analyze all your Asset Management queries.
  • Love the new layout. It gives you quite a few options to customize your dashboard.
  • HP has included great help topics with their new updates. With the keyword search, all the information is at your fingertips.

Cons

BMC Remedy Asset Management

  • The interface (ironically). My company has made an attempt to replace the "classic" Remedy interface with some more functional, modern, but Remedy set to a particular look and feel (and consequently, functionality)
  • The API is hidden from the user: There exists an API for Remedy, that would make my job TONS easier, as I like to perform actions on Remedy in bulk (and therefore - programmatically). Exposing a user API is very much mainstream these days, so Remedy relying on its interface to perform ITIL is very limiting
  • By extension- the result of Remedy's interface is that it becomes very "click-happy": little buttons, and links stuffed into every corner of the screen, with options API logically together. API is old, but it still feels very rushed.
  • The primary tool for most of my ITIL operations is: searching. API of searching goes into finding assets, checking in equipment, finding users, tickets, etc. What Remedy could very much benefit from a "Google" -like interface

  • Need more video tutorials - Although HP has great FAQs and has included the keyword search for topics, but some video tutorials would be great to help a new user.
  • Overwhelming at times. I remember when I first started using the software, just the magnitude of tools were too much. However even though I don't use half the tools even now, just the possibility of more functions available to me, makes it a great software.
  • Secure Log-in - I would like HP to invest into single sign-on where you don't need to put in your user ID & password constantly. A push notification to a personal device would a great added feature.

I find HP Asset Manager useful but sometimes too much data needs to be entered.

Alternatives Considered

BMC Remedy Asset Management

Remedy has been the standard for many years at many big name companies. The software is solid and it just works well. The software does need to be updated with some new features, but overall it is stable and is reliable. The cost was much less than several other software packages.

HP Asset Manager is definitely enterprise grade, whereas the other asset Management programs I have are specific to either one industry or a smaller locations that might not need the deep analysis & reporting functionalities & tools that are provided by HP. The cost is indeed higher than other programs like Fox Graphic Tracker (Internal Software) and Samange that I have used in the past, but for a large enterprise with multiple ongoing projects, HP Asset Manager is the way to go !

Return on Investment

BMC Remedy Asset Management

  • Asset Management has had a very positive impact for our IT department, making tracking assets against change, incident and problem tickets very simple.
  • Due to the ability to relate assets to our ticketing system, we can see historical trends of issues or complications with various assets. Thus allowing us to focus directly on potential or trouble areas before they escalate.

  • HP Asset Manager is great for compliance purposes. We know we have all the licenses in place when needed for upgrades or yearly reviews. Saves us times.
  • Ability to track & print reports saves PMs time in quartely reviews.
  • Great way to prepare for any presentations by the use of analytical tools which saves us money in investing in other software for presentation purposes.
