Braintree

Braintree is a lower cost alternative to many of the options business owners have through their bank. However, they will need to be techy or be working with a developer to set up. The setup and backend isn't as user friendly as alternatives. Braintree is a great option if you'll need to manually type in credit card details. Banks will sometimes charge a lot more for that option. The manual option is nice if your clients aren't as tech savvy and prefer to pay over the phone than to pay on your website.

Stripe

Stripe handles essentially all of your payment infrastructure for you – with little additional logic needed by you, and over the past few years they've significantly built out their additional features for things like invoicing, emailed receipts, etc. Stripe's initial selling point for us was their powerful and well-documented APIs, which, when coupled with their great technical support, has kept us happy over the years.I'm less familiar with what it looks like to try to make use of Stripe without integrating with them via API; I get the impression that they similarly support manually entering and processing payments, however I can't speak to what that process is like or how it compares to the competition.

Pros

Braintree

  • Braintree has excellent integration with the BigCommerce platform. The switch of our previous payment processing gateway to Braintree was very easy and only required a few clicks.
  • Tying into Braintree's BigCommerce integration, for company's like ours that are on the BigCommerce enterprise plan, Braintree's rates for BigCommerce enterprise customers are extremely competitive and saved us money.
  • Braintree has a pretty easy to use portal that can be accessed through the same login we use for PayPal which we are using in conjunction with Braintree with ease.
  • I've only had to call Braintree twice and my customer service issues were handled extremely quickly and easily.

  • Stripe integrates perfectly with our cloud-based accounting software, making collecting payments easy.
  • The dashboard and UI are simple enough to log into and process card transactions via the phone.
  • The reporting features are nice and also integrate into a BI platform we use to provide us with in-depth and accurate reporting of all credit card transactions we do.
  • Their fees are reasonable and in line with their competitors.

  • Despite the API documentation and examples from third party sources, it can be hard to get setup. Given the number of commonly desired things to setup, it would be nice to have more pre-coded features to get started with less trial and error.

We have used Braintree for two years and Braintree's service has been flawless. Easy to use and fast disbursements as well as very easy integration with BigCommerce Enterprise that gave us great and competitive rates. The customer service is fast and professional, just bear in mind they are on the east coast and calls later in the day will be met with silence as they close earlier. Otherwise, have been happy with Braintree, all that is missing is more features and customization like Authorize.Net and it will be the universal best payment processor.

Writing directly to Stripe Support typically has a poor response time. There have been core payment issues that have gone unresolved for months.The only bright side is that we have direct access to our account manager, who can, at times, escalate things. If you are a smaller customer, relying solely on email support might be slow.

Braintree

We used Braintree over Stripe because our developer was more familiar with Braintree and was able to integrate it the way we needed to. However, Stripe seemed like a good option but there wasn't any compelling reason in price or other features that made it worth taking more time for the developer to build the integrations we need.

Stripe

They are very similar. PayPal charges you monthly to have the ability to set up monthly payments. I had a problem with PayPal earlier this year where it would let me set up a recurring payment but then would not let me charge my customer the following month. It's actually a pain in the ass to have to go into PayPal every month and bill your clients on the billing cycle day. Stripe does it automatically.

  • American Express, not being integrated made us lose some sales.
  • Thanks to Braintree we did not have to pay to banks to open a Internet account. Super good super fast.
  • You need to be a programer to implement Braintree.

  • For the small fee I pay for processing services, it's nice to have so many flexible payment options for my clients.
  • The automation of deposits into my account makes it well worth a small fee. I plugged my information into my settings and haven't had to think twice.
