Crimson Hexagon, now part of Brandwatch

If you need to discover what topics may be trending in the social media space to identify what your target audiences want to hear from you, then Crimson Hexagon is a great tool. You can use the analytics widgets to drill down to specifics about what your audience is talking about, which enables you to develop content they want to consume.

It is well suited to quick turn projects that require very little as far as specific data is concerned. If you're trying to dig into the mentions to garner insights, it can be difficult to view things and find the most relevant content. But if you're looking for broad overviews leveraging big data insights, it is excellent.

Pros

Crimson Hexagon, now part of Brandwatch

  • Crimson is really good at performing complex boolean searches to bring back conversations about a particular topic.
  • Its reports are quick and easy to understand as well as being visually appealing.
  • Its ability to train examples into categories by giving it best match examples allows you to analyse a lot of data quite quickly.

  • Ad-hoc research. During planning phase of a campaign it is a helpful tool to understand the marketplace, key influencers and topics that engage a target demographic.
  • Post-event hashtag analysis. Rapid generation of reporting on efficacy of a campaign, key voices, topics that resonated, viral reach and more.
  • User interface. Friendly and accessible enough to minimize training needs and enable decentralized access, though we have found some hand-holding is still required to get the most out of the platform.

Cons

Crimson Hexagon, now part of Brandwatch

  • Can be hard for a user to utilize if they don't have a lot of background in building queries
  • I think Crimson Hexagon ForSight can do a better job of how users can arrange their dashboards
  • Crimson Hexagon ForSight can do a better job with the 'click-ability' of their dashboard components

  • Their influencer/klout score algorithm is worthless - it caps out at 10 so the New York Times and Jo Schmo gamer dude and Justin Bieber all have the same score.
  • The Boolean builder can be frustrating, it will tell you there is an error, but gives you no indication of where. In a complex string it can take forever to figure out what you messed up.
  • Twitter listening only goes back one year. If you ever need to compare something year over year, without anticipating the need in advance and downloading reports, you're screwed.

Would only consider changing if this product was purchased by a larger company, as has happened to several other social listening tools in the last 18 months

There are two differentiating features that Sysomos MAP has that the competitor tools I have experienced (Radian6, Meltwater Buzz) did not: user-friendly Boolean queries for searches and near-real-time results. The former is important because, of course, your results are only as good as your search/campaign. With Sysomos, once you master Boolean queries (which isn't terribly difficult) you're set for creating any kind of listening report. I strongly prefer this to the "campaign creator" forms that other services provide. Second, Sysomos MAP returns results almost immediately - like a Google search. So if you get your results and see that you need to tweak your query - no big deal. Or if you have a last-minute request for a client - not an issue. Meltwater can take up to 48 hours for a search to fully populate. This is a major issue if you get your full set of results back and see that you need to adjust the query; you're looking at another two days of wait time. A long wait on results can also prove problematic in agency settings where clients or prospective clients often need results with a quick turnaround.

Crimson is very unique, and other social listening or monitoring tools (or content management tools) do not currently have the abilities crimson offers. I think that the Buzz monitor and Opinion Monitors are easy to create and monitor, compared to other tools where the overall interface may be a bit more modern, but it is often confusing.

The product is very easy to use. The platform is visual and data is easy to read. Boolean construction can sometimes be difficult, but the boolean constructor tool is helpful for boolean beginners. For more experienced boolean constructors, the boolean display at the top is very helpful in identifying where there may be holes in the construction

Not really an availability issue, but concurrency licensing rules mean that only one user can be logged in at a time.

If searching over longer time frame, it can take a while to return results. SOmetimes as long as two to three minutes.

Although I have run into some issues with Crimson ForSight with receiving errors that were not very descriptive of the core issue (compared to an issue while writing a query and the issue is clearly highlighted in red), whenever I did reach out to customer support, they were responsive the day of and often within a few hours.

Some users might require some help getting keyword sets built if they are new to social listening.

Alternatives Considered

Crimson Hexagon, now part of Brandwatch

Crimson has some unique visualization that is not possible with other tools. The topic wheels, keyword network graph etc., are not available in other tools.

The sentiment engine is also unique as you can customize the machine and automate it to your need.

Sysomos MAP

  • Crimson Hexagon is on par with Sysomos but is better for deep sentiment insights and post emotion analysis.
  • Sprinklr is clunkier than Sysomos and used primarily for client specific publishing, not analytics or listening.
  • Other tools such as Julius, Socialbakers and Spredfast all offer different capabilities and are specialized for particular disciplines in the agency.

Return on Investment

Crimson Hexagon, now part of Brandwatch

  • It has helped us to open doors with potential clients by offering them insightful data about their brand, social strategy or social customer service.
  • Whilst I'm happy with the product I do believe it to be very costly in comparison to other social monitoring tools.
  • We've found it difficult to resell due to our client base being primarily made up of charities and smaller organisations with a small budget.

Sysomos MAP

  • Sysomos MAP allowed you to tell a story from the data and analytics, making client presentations more powerful and easier to follow.
  • Research efficiency shot through the roof. Instead of spending time gathering the data, we could focus on interpreting it and making the best insights/recommendations possible.
  • Overall, the platform is very intuitive. It allowed me as a new team member to contribute almost immediately.
