CallFire

While we primarily use the call tracking features, the software is also suitable for voice broadcasts, text broadcasts, and keyword-driven campaigns (text "ABC" to win XYZ). If you are looking for software to help with auto-prospecting to cold (non-subscriber) phone numbers, CallFire is not intended for that.

Twilio SMS

Twilio is well-suited for Salesforce integrations, automated messaging, and rapid communication with leads. If you are frustrated with Salesforce's built-in messaging platform (LiveMessage), I would recommend implementing Twilio. If text messaging is not a critical part of your operations, Twilio is not necessary. If you send fewer than 500 messages per month, you should probably stick with your messaging service through a mobile provider.

Pros

CallFire

  • Gives us instant notification of new telephone leads/responses to ads
  • Allows us to track quality control of client staff (responsiveness to leads)
  • Helps with tracking the efficacy of specific ads.

Twilio SMS

  • Sending the same text message to thousands of users. With Twilio's number pooling, you can use a "number pool" of regular phone numbers to round-robin send the same content to 1000s of users without getting blocked by the carriers.
  • Great Ruby API, very easy to use and write unit tests for
  • Call forwarding to your personal cellphone, to allow users to reach you (after going through an automated phone tree)

Cons

CallFire

  • The services are easy to use and robust, but there is room for improvement. Unfortunately, not much has changed over the last 2 years of use. There haven't been any new features or innovations in that time.
  • API integration and automation is not easy for most folks to jump into and there is very little technical support or documentation to take advantage of such features.
  • The standard reports are generally sufficient, but there isn't any customization or intelligence available.

Twilio SMS

  • Price is expensive. Twilio is the market leader and thus they charge more than their competitors. By far our most expensive SaaS service is Twilio.
  • Support reps are not always helpful
  • Documentation can be confusing at times

Alternatives Considered

CallFire

CallFire has a pricing structure that is attractive to us as a small business. The "pay as you use" options helps us keep our overhead low, especially with so many softwares already in our tech stack. It's a tremendous value for the cost!

Twilio SMS

Bandwidth is 2/3 the price of Twilio for sending SMS messages. However, we decided to simply go with the market leader because it was the safer choice. At our scale, the increased developer effort outweighed the marginal increase in costs due to the per-SMS pricing differential. Overall we feel confident we made the right decision.

Return on Investment

CallFire

  • Prior to using CallFire for our collections strategy, we had 10 people making manual calls to our past due customers. There has been a significant improvement in productivity.

Twilio SMS

  • Twilio has caused us to increase our conversion rate by approximately 3%
  • Twilio has increased customer happiness and thus decreased our churn rate (not measured precisely)
  • Twilio has made it faster to ship phone-related features, thus helping us keep our development efforts on-schedule
