Carbonite Endpoint 360 is a great solution for any organization with compliance needs. Office 365 defaults to a 30 day backup of all data. Carbonite Endpoint 360 extends this well beyond 30 days and provides an all-inclusive source for retention for data in Office 365. Any small to medium business would greatly benefit from this solution as they can design their entire infrastructure in Office 365 and ensure it's all backed up.

I can't think of scenarios it would be less appropriate or suited for, but it is well suited for an organization looking to keep their files in a safe environment with version tracking and audit trails. That is pretty much any organization in this day and age. Computers are great but hardware breaks down intermittently so knowing you have your files in a secure location that won't ever fail is fantastic

Pros

Carbonite Endpoint 360

  • It is excellent at automating your backups. You don't need to manually do it, just set it up once and let it run in the background.
  • It's pretty simple to set up and use. It will automatically suggest the best options that work for most people and you can be up and running pretty quickly.
  • It's safe and reliable. We have been using it for a couple of years now and had no major issues.
  • Their phone support is excellent.
  • It's also really easy to maintain your backed up data to reduce redundancy.

  • Restoring users and deleted files from both Cloud and desktop applications, with only a few button click.
  • The InSync dashboard allows me to see where all my assets are and when their last backups occurred.
  • The installation process was VERY easy. So getting everyone up and running was painless.

Cons

Carbonite Endpoint 360

  • To be honest not so impressed with the amount of time it has taken to get data backed up to the cloud.
  • I have not had to do a restore at this time so I cannot comment on the restore process.
  • I was not aware at time of procurement that the upload process would take so long since we were not procuring their hardware. Sales rep mad it seem like upload would only take a day or two and we are now starting week 7 hoping to be done by week 8 for 1.5 TBs of data.

  • As part of the initial setup, we had a few issues surrounding large numbers of accounts being backed up at the same time. This was more a Microsoft issue than anything, and with help from support, we resolved the issue.
  • The email reports can be a little useless on occasion. For example, I don't need an email every day with a failed backup report if there are no failures.
  • Again with email, the weekly backup report has so much information in it that the email sometimes fails to load. A simple email with a link to click would be better.

I found their alerting to be very poor. I missed several days of backups without knowledge of this, until I signed into the portal. I would get daily emails reporting backups were in progress or done, but nothing indicating that a backup had been stuck or paused for 3 days. For this reason alone, I did not renew.

Aside from Druva taking away the Share feature just to push folks to the cloud, it's perfect for what it does and should have just continued to grow not have clueless management decide they wanted to migrate the on-premise customers to the cloud version and offer the share tool for them, this was just wrong and remains wrong.

Does what it needs to do quietly and efficiently in the background without interrupting the workflow. It offers instant automated back-ups without troubling the end user. As it is such an automated system, once it is up and running, there is little or no support needed from the service provider. From what I understand the support from Carbonite during the setup and implementation was absolutely fine.

Most issues I have can be solved without opening a ticket. But if I need to get in touch with a support agent, I can open a chat request and within minutes have a tech on the end assisting me. The few tickets I had to open were resolved on the first call.

In consultation with a Druva support person we configured a few policies first for several groups of users. Once that was done it was easy to add users and generate emails that contained links and instructions to download/install the app. Once installed, the app applied the appropriate policy and the sync of data began. We had 40 or so devices to protect, and in a week or less they were all protected. The delays usually were on the part of the user who needed to schedule some time (15-30 minutes at most) to accept the invitation and download/install the app.

Carbonite Endpoint 360

We have also used Mozy Pro and Dropbox. They are all pretty similar in functionality/features of backing up data (not system state or databases as I don't think any of the 3 are well suited for that). To me, it comes down to personal preference and choosing a product that is universal for multiple users, for ease of management.

My biggest requirement for looking at Data Protection as a Service is security, both in transit and at rest. Druva inSync offers one of the best security models where if a key is chance it does not affect the current session. Furthermore, we did not see the same dedupe savings with other services.

  • Data backup is critical to us. Carbonite ensures that we don't lose anything important.
  • It is also good protection against accidental deletions or if someone makes mistakes.
  • Cloud back up also means we don't have to worry about maintaining back up equipment or redundancy in storage.

  • Anytime a user does his/her own restore it has saved his or her own time in not having to redo the lost changes made and it doesn't involve IT staff to do a restore for them or to try looking for or recovering the lost/deleted/corrupted file. This savings in money and time spent is apparent, numerous and possibly priceless.
  • Druva is an affordable product; it's per user cost is acceptable and is affordable for even small businesses
