Chrome Remote Desktop

It is well suited in cases where your company/organization is looking for a low/no cost remote desktop solution, or is looking for something that can be used by most anyone right away. Most organizations don't want things to be too complex, especially with a remote desktop solution, which is generally not very complex software to begin with. It would be less appropriate in cases where the company/organization has already purchased licensing for a commercial product, and/or has been heavily using a commercial product for some time.

Splashtop SOS

Splashtop SOS is suited to any situation where hands-on tech support is needed including dealing with multiple computers. Obviously, it cannot be used if the client does not have Internet access. For some situations, administrative access may be needed to troubleshoot a problem. In rare cases where client user does not have such access, this could be a problem. This normally can easily be remedied by the client or the clients onsite IT person.

Pros

Chrome Remote Desktop

  • Unlike Microsoft's Remote Desktop, this program is the same across platforms, which is helpful for users.
  • This program also allows direct control over the desktop (like TeamViewer) and doesn't give you a simulated log on (like Remote Desktop). This is advantageous for seeing exactly what's on the screen but can make it a little laggy.
  • The interface is very nice and clear once it's set up. It's obvious which computer is which and it's just a couple of clicks from opening the program to a connection.
  • The mobile app is also really really well done.

Splashtop SOS

  • I have a client with multiple machines. When doing software upgrades Splashtop shines by allowing simultaneous connections that in turn allow me to make sure all of the computers are interacting correctly with one another.
  • No lag time. Controlling a computer feels live.
  • File transfers are simple from my machine to the remotely accessed machine and vise versa.

Cons

Chrome Remote Desktop

  • I like this software in general very much. The only problem is that there are times when the ram consumption of my computer increases too much, for a few seconds. This causes my computer and connection to freeze. It is not completely stable.

Splashtop SOS

  • In Splashtop SOS you can deploy a [somewhat] managed antivirus, Bitfender. One area that could be better managed is the addition of exclusions for the AV scanner. Currently (as of June 2021) I cannot add my own exclusions, but rather I need to email Splashtop support and they must add them on a per machine basis.
  • Splashtop SOS's AV management should also include the ability to apply settings to a group of client machines at the same time.
  • The desktop UI is simple and easy to use, but two things could be added easily and would improve things a lot: The status of a client machine is show as live or not, and that can be refreshed, manually. An automatic update cycle would be good. Further, if the last moment I client machine was live could be displayed, that would be helpful.
  • I have experienced a few instances of receiving a blank or black screen when connecting to a client. This can be resolved by choosing different display interface options, or adding an additional drive. There are also some instances where connecting to a Splashtop client actually closes, or minimizes certain graphics-intensive apps. I have not gotten to the bottom of this issue as yet.

A very easy lightweight tool that is completely scalable and deployed via google admin platform. The tool is free to use and works extremely well with the chrome devices we currently have deployed. Any organization using chrome or google suites should look into this tool as it's much easier to use then other remote software in the market

I would rarely give a 10 for usability to any tool, but Chrome Remote Desktop doesn't deserves 9 either :) I find all options easy to understand. I don't have to work my brain to understand how things work when using Chrome Remote Desktop.

It has a clean and simple interface. Extremely easy and fast to start a remote session with a PC or Mac. It is mostly intuitive if you are used to working with PCs. The remote sessions for phones are more complicated and take longer to set up. I don't use them very often though

The only support I ever accessed were help files and web tutorials. I never tried to access personal support, mostly because I don't believe much of it is available. As a free service, my expectations for support are pretty low; that said, Chrome Remote Desktop is easy enough to configure and troubleshoot even with limited technical knowledge.

Alternatives Considered

Chrome Remote Desktop

I've used TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Go to My PC, and Microsoft Remote Desktop to access PCs remotely. Chrome Remote Desktop is one of the best remote desktop programs. The other programs are more expensive and provide fewer features than Chrome Remote Desktop. It is much easier to switch among multiple PCs using Chrome Remote Desktop than some of the other mentioned programs.

Splashtop SOS

I have not looked at TeamViewer in quite some time but I found Splashtop SOS for me to be at least a 1 to 1 feature switch. And right now connecting to mobile devices to see a customers screen is included with Splashtop SOS and it is a real value add. I hope it says that way. TeamViewer is just too expensive in comparison.

Return on Investment

Chrome Remote Desktop

  • Chrome licensing is better priced than MS, so this is positive.
  • Utilizing multiple desktops to submit and monitor long-running batch jobs reduces the need for only 1 desktop to submit and admin job scheduling, this is also a positive.
  • Patching is a negative, it is too often and too time-consuming.

Splashtop SOS

  • On average, Splashtop SOS has cut down the amount of time spent providing support to end-users by as much as 60%. The ease of access and user-friendly design of the client-facing app means considerably less time spent on walking the client through the setup of the remote support client. With just two clicks from the end-user, I can be connected remotely to their workstation, whether it is a PC or a Mac.
