Actually if we place it into the internet gateway, we do nothing in front of the firewall. Yes, it's working well also, if we put into the routing, it works well. But we should not use it instead of switch. Because some people tend to use the router instead of layer three suite. So yes, I try to use it.

Cisco Routers are well suited when it comes to create a meshed VPN infrastructure with all your branch offices worldwide. You can easily configure the Cisco Routers with static VPN, DMVPN or SD-WAN, which is great. You can also use a Cisco Routers as a CUBE to establish a direct routing (voice) for MS Teams.

Pros
Cisco
  • The ISR 4000 is an excellent router for our voice services. We purchased CUBE licensing in order to do this.
  • The ISR 4000 is an excellent router for security purposes as well. We purchased the security license with the router and that allowed us to run a Zone-Based Firewall.
  • The ISR 4000 is very simple and straight forward to configure.

Cons
Cisco
  • A greater number of onboard WAN ports would be an improvement over the model we purchased, which only had two. [This] means we'll have to buy more expensive network cards to get more convenience.
  • The small router was a plus in some branches, but it was a hindrance in others. Its width is about half the size of the rack, so we had to keep it on top of another device.
  • When compared to its competitors, the rack mounting kit is unreliable and expensive to purchase.

  • Software-defined radios could be used so that both the radios could be converted into 5 GHz model to provide enhanced connectivity in network congestion scenarios.
  • Support for low power IoT devices.
  • Should provide more details about devices connected to the access points such as the risk score of the devices.
  • Enhanced encryption algorithms and quick firmware upgrades.

We are extremely likely to renew, as we have been very happy with our Cisco Routers for over 10 years. Their uptime as well as stable nature makes them ideal for us, as we are an industry that cannot afford downtime. We trust our partner to recommend our next model Cisco, when the time comes.

Support Rating
Cisco
There is always room for improvement with support, but Cisco support has been good to me over the years. Being able to call or submit online TAC cases makes it so I can get my issues or questions answered faster. They have even added the TAC bot for TAC cases to get to support even faster!

Alternatives Considered
Cisco
We did not compare the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers to other competitors as we used Cisco for a long period of time already. We selected this product as we used a lot of CISCO products in the past and with good support. Other products don't have the protocols that CISCO products have.

Cisco Routers have better performance and are more efficient when working. They are friendlier in their configuration environment and in turn, their TAC service is superior to that of other brands, and at the same level of documentation it is more accessible than that of other vendors

Return on Investment
Cisco
  • We have had several times where we purchased assets and needed to add a remote site quickly for new staff to work. This is very quick to spin up and provides agility to business demands
  • Allows for agility to failover network access when primary Internet services fail. We have near 100% uptime due to the ISR configuration we use. Even in the most remote locations.
  • Since we adopted Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000) as our de facto WAN hardware, we have cookie-cuttered our WAN infrastructure, which makes it easy to manage, upgrade, and alter with minimal impact to users and IT.
