Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

Ok so they're fast, check. They're secure, check. They're well made, check. So what would stop me from recommending at all?? Well they're not cheap, not at all. And it doesnt end there, if you want to keep these guys on the smart licensing track (which you do, believe me, it will save you headaches) then its even more money. But like they say, you get what you pay for!

Juniper MX Series

It is well suited as a WAN/Internet Edge device. It is easy to configure BGP, contexts and routing instances. Its suite of tools has saved our organization money by being able to provide services (tag stacking, for example) that our provider would normally charge us more for. Due to interface cost this would not be appropriate as a LAN aggregation device.

Pros

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

  • Easy to use, simple to operate, highly predictable. IOS/IOS-XE is well known and there is a virtually limitless pool of engineers who know this platform and if not having direct experience, can apply knowledge from other IOS/IOS-XE with very little adjustment.
  • Extremely flexible due to wide variety of interfaces. NIM and SM-X provide a great deal options: TDM, E&M, FXO, FXS, switches and servers are all options.
  • Robust IP feature set: Routing protocols, NBAR, Netflow, QoS, DMVPN. This large IP feature set gives us the ISR makes it a highly re-usable router, capable in many different use cases.

Juniper MX Series

  • It's a robust platform, very resilient. It handles large traffic flows well.
  • It's a flexible architecture, it can be configured with provider or enterprise options (or both!)
  • It has an excellent versioning system, simple commit/confirm/rollback procedures!

Cons

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

  • The UCS-E blades that you can insert into the routers only get refreshed every 4-5 years. So the cpu/memory/HDD options are limited and quite dated
  • Some LTE connectivity options for some countries are lacking or LTE NIM cards for some countries are not supported
  • Does not support dual power supply options for maintaining uptime from power events

Juniper MX Series

  • Sometimes I wish that documentation was more robust, complete, though this has been improved of late.
  • It would be nice if netflow was easier to configure.
  • It would be nice if the platform was cheaper.

Very easy to use, and very effective on our environment. Scalable, stable, and can support all routing protocols needed in most manufacturing environments. The security license is very effective.

As always the support from Cisco through the TAC has been great for this product. Of course, there are always some bugs to be expected, but to be honest, I think this platform is actually fairly stable and it builds on the IOS software that has been around for many years.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

We did not compare the Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers to other competitors as we used Cisco for a long period of time already. We selected this product as we used a lot of CISCO products in the past and with good support. Other products don't have the protocols that CISCO products have.

Juniper MX Series

We preferred Juniper over Cisco for our WAN/Internet routing needs for a number of reasons. First was the price, the Juniper offering was much more competitive than Cisco's. Secondly, was feature set, Juniper's implementation of routing protocols, routing tables, and forwarding options are better thought-out than Cisco's (not to mention Juniper's longstanding use of commit/confirm/rollback features, which Cisco has only started to use recently, and only on some of their products).

Return on Investment

Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)

  • deployment in different branches were quick and easy to be done
  • Same config push on all routers helped to get the setup done in few hours.
  • expansion is very easy with NIM available for different purpose whether it be WAN port or PRI or FXS port.
  • Cube license helps to increase the SIP channel as and when required as no hardware change is required which is very helpful.

Juniper MX Series

  • Its flexible architecture and configuration styles has saved our organization money by providing feature we would have otherwise needed to purchase from our ISPs.
  • It has a long and healthy lifecycle, with potential upgrades for more performance if needed. (This helps alleviate the downtime associated with chassis replacement.)
  • The only drawback is some of the highest throughput interfaces are expensive.
