Cisco Aironet 1570 Series Access Points

Due to its software, it can fit in any outdoor deployment or requirement. It has POE Out port, Various Antenna selection, various powering option, GPS, Industrial rigid design (coming from a very hot and humid area), SFP compatible.
You can deploy this AP nearly on any use case you face, I have a successful deployment of 400m distance between two of them as a MESH and it has been running fine for the past 2 years on the beach, it's also providing wired connection to clients on the MESH side.
Some other use case is a WGB connected to a AirQuality sensor that has been up since day 1, with no problems whatsoever.

Cisco Catalyst 9800-CL Wireless Controller

I believe this is the new way controllers can be used. For supporting anywhere less than 100 Access points, everyone should move towards using 9800 CL and implement on any low-end server. In cases where 500+ Access points are installed, an appliance-based controller may be used, or a CL version with a powerful server can be used such as UCS with many cores.

Cisco Catalyst 9800-CL Wireless Controller

  • Some open DDTS don't allow older access points
  • To use as a central controller, the previous image doesn't let you use overlapping IP space between different locations using a central controller

There is no other better option than this. It's the line between the commercial Cisco grade AP's and industrial ones.

The only problem I had when I got this WLC is the upgrade, as the documentation was not clear enough on how to do the upgrade and the modes it had. Like the older platforms, I did not wait enough time, and reloaded the WLC, which bricked it to ROMMON mode. Believe me, for a first impression, this was bad. I was willing to give up on this platform and call it the same as the old ones of the 3560. Luckily the Cisco team jumped to help and restored it, which was easy. It shows that the hardware is reliable enough for such big issues. The software and documenation on the other hand needs improvement which is something expected.

As with any system, one should think about implementing the controllers in a highly available fashion, that way if one controller is upgraded, all the Access points can be moved to the 2nd controller and then post-upgrade, the APs can be moved back to the original controller. That way little downtime can be achieved.

Initially I had a problem with the regulatory and channel selection, it was a bug on the AP as it was fairly new, solved by TAC on engineering release, and since then it has been performing flawlessly.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Aironet 1570 Series Access Points

Making the decision to use Aironet is more related to the type of scenario that you have. We chose Aironet because we mainly manage all the network internally and already have Cisco products to integrate with Meraki which is a good option if you are starting from scratch.

Cisco Catalyst 9800-CL Wireless Controller

There is no room of comparison with the older AirOS. The 9800 series is built over a complete new architecture, the whole point of this HW is to learn from the AirOS mistakes and never do them again. With new technology comes new challenges, which in my opinion, is licensing. I chose this platform because Cisco are moving there.

Return on Investment

Cisco Aironet 1570 Series Access Points

  • ROI pays off on the long term especially if you care about security and offering a good service to your users.
  • ROI also pays on terms of warranty and time of response especially if your users depend heavily on the network.
  • ROI also depends on the amount and type of users that you have. It's less likely to pay if you have few users.
