Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

Cisco APs are excellent choices for both our enterprise offices and remote production sites due to Cisco’s depth of wireless product options. I have not encountered any scenario where I could not use Cisco APs.

Cisco Catalyst 9800-L Wireless Controller

I always recommend two WLCs instead of a single one to think about the failover scenario. It is very important to think about this detail. Catalyst 9800-L is for small to medium scenarios supporting up to 300 access points to purchase the performance license. Licenses can be extended over time without any problems. As the company grows, we buy more and enable our access points.

Cons

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

  • Roaming seems to be an issue with newer devices on the older 1600 access points.
  • The coverage provided by different power levels doesn't seem accurate at times.
  • Susceptible to common interference issues in healthcare.

Cisco Catalyst 9800-L Wireless Controller

  • To support more access points and customers to manage, it is necessary to purchase another performance license that we have not purchased.

As previously mentioned, we have no problems with inoperative WLC because we have two units in an active/standby scenario. The WLAN network is not essential for the company because many use notebooks and smartphones on the corporate network and need access to the internet at all times.

We prioritize a scenario in high availability and redundancy with an active WLC and the secondary standby in order to prevent the wireless network from being inoperable. Our second redundancy in addition to the equipment is the internet links where we also have two. With two WLCs we have a secure and always available network.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

Although it is a good product and could easily fulfill our requirement, we already have a lot of Cisco products made by Aironet for our wireless network. Our trust in our reseller for Cisco equipment was the other reason.

Return on Investment

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

  • Fast wireless deployment: just connect a new AP to an 802.11x controlled switchport and profiling (ISE) and WLC makes all the job. This allows us to enable new workplaces within the organization.
  • Great coverage: less access points per area, avoiding increasing budget.
  • Mobility: With Aironet and Cisco WLC we have seamless roaming.
  • Investment protection: We can even use old AP models like Aironet 1142 (discontinued) with our WLC , so we don't need to get rid of them.
