Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

The scenario of these Aironet 2800 series access points is for indoor environments and is focused on corporate environments with a high density of simultaneous users. The device has a very beautiful appearance, white and without external antennas with radios in 2.4ghz and 5ghz. The speed is high and almost matches the wired network. We separated the SSID of guests and staff by different VLANs to provide security and control of the data.

Cons

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

  • Roaming seems to be an issue with newer devices on the older 1600 access points.
  • The coverage provided by different power levels doesn't seem accurate at times.
  • Susceptible to common interference issues in healthcare.

WatchGuard Secure Wi-Fi Cloud

  • As far as a native VLAN configuration, VLAN 0 is used while mostly all other vendors use VLAN 1 as the default (native) VLAN. Minor detail, but keeps configuration standard across the board.
  • The policing feature is powerful, but at times too powerful and needs to be modified a few times before getting the solution where you need it to be. Different levels of policing would be nice, with the option of creating your own and/or modifying an existing template.

The support team is great! I have never had an issue getting the support I needed. They make it a point to stick with the issue until it's resolved to the customer's satisfaction. They do not make you feel like you need to hurry up and close the ticket. They make sure the solution is working as designed.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

Although it is a good product and could easily fulfill our requirement, we already have a lot of Cisco products made by Aironet for our wireless network. Our trust in our reseller for Cisco equipment was the other reason.

WatchGuard Secure Wi-Fi Cloud

WatchGuard Secure versus the Mojo Networks is the same being that they both use the same platform. Versus the Fortinet solution- it has a stronger security suite, but as far as functionality, they are about equal.Versus the Meraki solution- it has a stronger security suite, and costs less, but about the same when it comes to cloud-based management.

Return on Investment

Cisco Aironet and Catalyst Access Points

  • Fast wireless deployment: just connect a new AP to an 802.11x controlled switchport and profiling (ISE) and WLC makes all the job. This allows us to enable new workplaces within the organization.
  • Great coverage: less access points per area, avoiding increasing budget.
  • Mobility: With Aironet and Cisco WLC we have seamless roaming.
  • Investment protection: We can even use old AP models like Aironet 1142 (discontinued) with our WLC , so we don't need to get rid of them.

WatchGuard Secure Wi-Fi Cloud

  • The ROI for every customer we have deployed this solution has been within months. This is especially seen with customers who resell their Wi-Fi service.
  • Due to the stability of the solution, our NOC spends less time troubleshooting issues and outages which in turns gives them time to focus on other customer issues.
  • Due to the success of these deployments, our company continues to resell this product and has received higher discounts during the sale process which in turn have increased our profit margins.
