Cisco Meraki MX Firewalls

The Cisco Meraki MX line is best suited for small to mid sized business units that need to inter connect offices. The Meraki VPN solution is extra easy to setup and manage multiple endpoints from a single dashboard. The Meraki firewall rules are extremely intuitive and easy to configure as well

Pros

Cisco ASA

  • How we can manage: ASDM the GUI is so much easier to manage it even for a new guy also.
  • Traffic handling capacity
  • More secure and the different features it gives.
  • Support from the TAC team or from the community manages to handle issues very efficiently.

  • The dashboard brings all management features with you wherever you are. All you need is an Internet connection and a browser and you can manage the solution. The dashboard tracks your uplink connectivity to the dashboard and double checks with you all changes impacting the connectivity, making it much safer to enact changes remotely. Dual WAN connections are greatly simplified and site-to-site VPNs automatically connect regardless of what WAN connection is active.
  • Site-to-Site VPNs are the easier to setup than any other vendor’s solution. You simple pick two or more devices to tunnel together and then select what network subsets should be allowed to cross the tunnel and you are done. The solution handles all the details. Site-to-site VPNs can dynamically follow IP changes with no need for static IPs.
  • For MSPs the dashboard is even more convenient as all your clients are on the same MSP account. Switching between managing different clients Meraki equipment is a few clicks once you login to the dashboard. Two-factor authentication is available for enhanced dashboard security.

Cons

Cisco ASA

  • The Java based ASDM can botch commands and isn't compatible on some more locked down systems.
  • Monitoring. Really the same complaint as above, the monitoring available through the ASDM is crappy at best. A much better solution is to send the logs and mirror packets to a SEIM, but that can create issues of its own when looking for realtime analysis.
  • Compatibility across other ASA models. ASA 5520s don't play well with 5525X which don't play well with older 5510s. Each is great on it's own, but it's next to impossible to logically stack them or have them as layers of firewalls in an infrastructure.
  • Lack of cloud based management. The Cisco Meraki security devices do this well, but the ASAs are still behind in this regard.

  • Very expensive.
  • If you stop paying for support, they stop passing traffic.

As we have it in place now, we will continue to keep it at our remote sites. Future expansion is something we are reviewing, and may well start with some of the larger switches as they seem to offer good performance and management at a reasonable price. Wireless is also something we're investing in and their devices are great for that.

The Cisco Meraki MX series is very easy to use. Setting up user VPN access, site to site VPN to tie multiple locations together and managing all your devices. You can even download the latest firmware and install without ever leaving the dashboard. Meraki is the very definition of easy to use

Alternatives Considered

Cisco ASA

As Cisco is one of the top players in the network business, we can get answers to our questions from online communities along with 24/7 tech support from Cisco using our support contracts. We have considered other companies in the past, but the pricing for Cisco products has been competitive and would ultimately provide savings since we wouldn't have to retrain our staff on other brands.

Cisco Meraki MX Firewalls was slightly more expensive but far superior in features, functionality, and ease of administration.

Return on Investment

Cisco ASA

  • The ROI is generally not as good as the investors would like it to be.
  • Very good support and attention from the company and its associates, which reduces the recovery time in case of an incident.

Cisco Meraki MX Firewalls

  • These were a bit more expensive than some options, but well worth it now that we've had them for a few years.
  • It's made remotely managing locations far less expensive since you don't need on-site staff or need to send IT staff remotely to help.
