Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

The scenario basically consists of more than 30 [Cisco] Catalyst 2960[-X/XR Series] Switches with PoE and are spread over several racks. There is segmentation by vlan by specific departments to avoid broadcast. The switches have a lot of performance, speed and very interesting security features that prevent, for example: arp spoofing, dhscp snopping, acls and others.

Cisco Meraki MS

[Cisco Meraki MS is] best suited for companies with multiple sites that want visibility and switch management in one platform. The Meraki series is most likely a better fit for small to mid-size companies that are comfortable with a cloud first approach. IT departments that have a string desire to use advanced features and "get under the hood" may be unhappy with Meraki. Your only way to mange the switches it really through there cloud, the switches have a very debug centered local webpage. Companies also looking for 40/100 GBPs would have a wider model range in another vendor, Meraki also dos not support Fibre Channel. If departments also want to control updates on a certain version, Meraki may not be ideal, they do not let you get too far behind in firmware. They have in the last 6 years really kept adding so many new features and have a good value stream and have been increasing the product portfolio a lot.

Pros

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

  • I haven't worked on many other brands of routers/switches, but I can say with certainty that Cisco's IOS network operating system is very well written. Using the question mark helps you find a command or complete its options very easily.
  • Cisco's Catalyst documentation is superb and if you can't find what you're looking for there, you can find a ton of great blogs by certified Cisco engineers.
  • Cisco may be notorious for creating their own proprietary protocols, but for every proprietary protocol they also support the industry standard protocols.
  • Cisco Catalyst switches are genuine workhorses; we still have some switches on our network that are older than 10 years and still performing great!
  • I like the way Catalyst implements vlans; very easy and straightforward
  • I like the stacking capability of Catalyst. it's very easy to configure and you are now managing a single switch, composed of multiple switches

Cisco Meraki MS

  • Meraki MS switches are wonderful at allowing a network admin to configure a VPN mesh network without having to have highly specialized knowledge. Unlike Cisco switches, there is no CLI, there is only a GUI, and Meraki support helps you set it up as you add nodes to your network.
  • Meraki MS switches are easy to deploy. Full stop.
  • They can work with any firewall or ASA but I would strongly recommend using the Meraki MX security appliance if you are going to use Meraki MS switches because they were made to work together.
  • They easily stack. It's all done for you in the Meraki cloud control panel.
  • They will get an address from your admin VLAN's DHCP scope and keep it. Even if you unplug it and move it, you will not have to worry about addressing it.
  • The GUI is online and you can reach it from anywhere, so as long as you have the credentials, you can manage the network from any device that has a browser.

Cons

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

  • Cost. Always the downside with Cisco. The competition is cheaper.
  • Tech support used to be incredible. It is above average now but not like it was 10+ years ago.
  • Better support for third-party cables and SFP/SFP+ would be nice. I hate being warned in the logs that I'm not using a Cisco OEM accessory.
  • I wish they could upgrade the stack without taking the whole stack offline. This is a real issue.

Cisco Meraki MS

  • Firmware management could be a little [more] customer change management centric.
  • Some of the online portal could be more pop-out driven instead of navigating back and forth between pages and reloading the page to do simple things.
  • Instances where Meraki switches won't have cloud access for long periods of time make it difficult to be able to maintain switch code configuration.

Product support is one area that Cisco leads the field in. Other vendors try providing technical support for their products. When I purchase catalyst switches I know that "IF" I where to have a problem with one of my Cisco Catalyst switches that I can either open a TAC case online or over the phone and a knowledgeable person will be able to help me with what ever the issue is.

Meraki support is always helpful when we run into any issues. They have helped us through config and best practices in many cases as well. They have been one of the most effective support groups I have worked with. The only occasional downside is more unique to us. We use some Cisco Catalyst switches for data center management and other Layer 3 functions. When issues come up in the Data center that has both Cisco and Meraki, the two support groups tend to shift blame towards each other for a bit until we find the issue.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Catalyst 2960-X/XR Series Switches

They are a lot better than the meraki MS switches because they still function and have a console port to configure them off-line and Meraki's fail without the internet access. That being said I personally prefer the nexus switch and the NXOS over IOS. However the Meraki switches are better for a branch location you cannot be at all the time.

The scalability is one of the key features and is very ease to use and understand quickly. Additional modules can be added with ease without having to build configs and apply them manually as in a traditional cisco networking infrastructure. This makes it ideal for fast paced environment where requirements are often changing.

Cisco Meraki MS

  • One critical business objective was a worry-free network. This is it!
  • Another business objective was to be able to manage my entire network from a single interface. Meraki delivers again! Not having to be in the building to monitor, manage and configure networking equipment is worth the weight of these devices in gold.
  • I wanted to be able to see everything that was happening on my network. Meraki enables that. I can see every device, what each is doing, set alerts for when individual ports go down or the device that is attached stops sending packets, etc. The visibility into my network's performance and security is unprecedented. I never knew what I was missing and I do not want to go back!
