Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

They are best suited for edge switching applications. We do have a couple in the data center doing legacy copper VM hosts that perform ok. But edge switching is most definitely the best suited, at least in our specific situation. I know that some of the higher end catalyst switches have the ability to do layer 3 functionality, but that's not something that we've personally delved into with the catalyst line.

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches

We have used the 2960 as access switches and the 3560 for their layer3 functions so that we are using each device in what it does best. They can tolerate unfavorable environmental situations, but it's not recommended.-------Hemos utilizado los 2960 como switches de acceso y los 3560 para sus funciones de capa3 de manera que estamos utilizando cada equipo en lo que hace mejor, son incluso bien tolerantes a situaciones ambientales no favorables, aunque no es los recomendable.

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches

  • Stable and reliable stacking solution that allows us to connect our servers with bonded NICs and maintain 100% networking uptime.
  • Layer-3 services like inter-VLAN routing allow us to provide vast and efficient connectivity between different services while keeping perimeter security intact.
  • Netflow support. Very lightweight and complete flow generation that provides invaluable information about the data center traffic.

Cons

Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

  • Web interface. A fully functional web interface with all configuration capabilities would help for admins with less experience.
  • They need built in monitoring that gives real statistics and other data.

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches

  • Price. There are competitors that provide similar service levels at the most reasonable prices.
  • The innovation of emerging technology in areas of network management and integration.
  • Model numbers can be confusing when wanting to find exactly what you need.
  • Cisco IOS feature sets are even more confusing than the model numbers
  • Be ware of IOS bug(s) that could affect your infrastructure. But every vendor will have them

We are extremely happy with the Cisco Catalyst series and don't have any reason to switch. As long as we continue to get great use and service out of the products we'll continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

Cisco by and far does a great job with the Catalyst line. From a layer 2 dumb switch all the way up to ISP carrier grade switching within the Catalyst portfolio. The best part about it is command parity among the various tiers of product. The only differences are going to lie in what features are available per switch.

Based on my previous experience with other vendors, Cisco is worlds apart. I can manage every feature I need with great flexibility.Other vendors that only provide web UI, limited functionality exists. The other benefit is that since Cisco has been a strong player for so long, their training is being done in some high schools now expanding the knowledge to more of the workforce.

Most of the time, the TAC is totally on their game. Occasionally, we run into a support person that either wants to hold on to the ticket, or seems to be disinterested. Language can sometimes be a barrier.

TAC is awesome but we have had a few techs that were unaware of what a specific product was.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

In the past, I had several opportunities to test a lot of network devices from a slightly lower tier and several from the same price range as the 3560-CX. Let's immediately note that compared to cheaper switches, these are several classes higher in terms of stability and capability. As far as a similar price range is concerned, the competing solutions also have comparable stability, but I noticed that Cisco devices give much more configuration possibilities and better features.

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches

Cisco Switches stacks up because it is easy to deploy, configure and manage. It is stable and booting is quite fast. Cisco provides a set of up to eight stacking capable switches. Cisco Catalyst switches are the best network device that we can use in our company. The support with Cisco TAC team is the best.

Return on Investment

Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

  • Expansion has been made in our organization. We recently use a 24 port switch but as the company grew, we required a more robust switch
  • Core switches are able to do MPLS to reach other locations
  • Most switches are now 48 port and support fiber ports not only Gigabit ports

Cisco Catalyst 3650 Series Switches

  • Good support means less downtime when required.
  • Widely used, easy to research issue means quicker turnaround when there is a problem.
  • Can be confusing for less experienced admin with no previous exposure means harder to train, which costs us more time.
