Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

They are best suited for edge switching applications. We do have a couple in the data center doing legacy copper VM hosts that perform ok. But edge switching is most definitely the best suited, at least in our specific situation. I know that some of the higher end catalyst switches have the ability to do layer 3 functionality, but that's not something that we've personally delved into with the catalyst line.

Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches

Cisco [Catalyst 9200 Series] Switches work great. Most enterprises use cisco office equipment (Phones, Cameras etc. ), and switches work seamlessly with these products. Always full throughput on all ports, rarely any STP issues. Not well suited for small businesses (Costly) or in scenarios where network devices are not uniform/ multi vendor

We are extremely happy with the Cisco Catalyst series and don't have any reason to switch. As long as we continue to get great use and service out of the products we'll continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

I don't think very soon we'll renew our use of Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches because most of them are now used for access switch purposes for end-users.Even if we have a stack with a distribution switch (to use Uplink and to connect access points), the global LAN design can't be changed for now.

Cisco by and far does a great job with the Catalyst line. From a layer 2 dumb switch all the way up to ISP carrier grade switching within the Catalyst portfolio. The best part about it is command parity among the various tiers of product. The only differences are going to lie in what features are available per switch.

Most of the time, the TAC is totally on their game. Occasionally, we run into a support person that either wants to hold on to the ticket, or seems to be disinterested. Language can sometimes be a barrier.

As usual, the Cisco documentation can be exhaustive, and it's not so easy to find the appropriate information on the website. However, when you are a bit used to it, the search can be possible and not so difficult. The first white paper that was comparing the 2960X with the 9200 equivalent was nice and saved us a lot of time and energy.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

The familiarity and leadership of Cisco is always something that will be considered when choosing new network equipment. Though some of the Aruba equipment we have worked with is very good, there is always that trust with Cisco ( especially the Cisco catalyst switches) that you are using the latest and most reliable technology.

Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches

The 9200 switches are a great switch for reliability and processing. We use our 9200's for Layer 2 only switching, as well as use some 9200's in routing cases as well. The 9200's is a model number we use as our primary model number for upgrading our other switches like the 2960's and 3850's.

Return on Investment

Cisco Catalyst 3560-CX Series Switches

  • Expansion has been made in our organization. We recently use a 24 port switch but as the company grew, we required a more robust switch
  • Core switches are able to do MPLS to reach other locations
  • Most switches are now 48 port and support fiber ports not only Gigabit ports

Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches

  • Considering their scalability and future-proof nature, ROI is there (no replacement is required)
  • Due to cost, the ROI will be longer
  • Security and reliability of the switches are very important for efficient working, which Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches are providing
