Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series Switches

Cisco Catalyst is well suited for small to medium as well as enterprise networking segments where there is a need to manage wired and wireless users from a single pane of glass with higher visibility and control. It is less suitable where the company is only for basic networks to use internet surfing without any client management and integration of network management tools.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

These Dell [PowerConnect Switches] will perform great on almost every scenario, that's no lie at all. On the other hand, they are expensive and if you have a small company or little to invest, they are not the best option. The model I worked with on my research paper is not the best out there, but performed great on all stress and comparisons made.

Cons

Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series Switches

  • The annual support can be a killer for some organizations; buying a hot spare can be more feasible
  • BOM for units should be clearer for the procurement teams
  • Firmware upgrades could be simplified for mid-level techs

Dell PowerConnect Switches

  • Precarious graphical (GUI) mode, needing to be updated for more efficient technologies such as HTML5
  • Short support time, given how much these devices support in terms of use. I have owned the devices for years, but no longer have a warranty

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series Switches

We have not evaluated other switches as we have been using other versions prior to making the upgrade and were also very happy with older iterations of the product. We will continue to use them for the foreseeable future.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

Dell PowerConnect Switches offer much better value for money than Cisco and a similar interface for deployment and management. They are interoperable and compatible with all open networking standards so will work with other vendors equipment. They also offer some unique hardware offerings such as 12 port 10GBe switches which is useful in smaller environments

Return on Investment

Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series Switches

  • The switch is very reliable and for that reason, the operation of a business is very stable and without interruptions.
  • Because it is relatively easy to use, the organization doesn't need very highly qualified engineers.
  • Because of is high price, it is not so good ROI.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

  • The ROI is great. Lost of ports and features for the money.
