Cisco Meraki SM

The free tier of Meraki SM was excellent and we used it for a few years. We now use the paid version. Meraki SM is excellent for schools that need to manage large amounts of iPads without needing to maintain physical contact with them. We are a small primary school on a single site however Meraki SM is able to handle larger sites. Devices are able to be configured so that the permissions are automatically set depending on the current user, or the current location. This allows for excellent customization. In my experience, Meraki SM works best when used with iPads. It does have some features for managing other devices but I have not used it for this.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium

There is very little to not like about [Microsoft 365 Business Premium]. In a law firm setting it is superior and is the leader in business office user end software. We use it for electronic discovery requests, review, trial prep, depositions, just about every aspect of the legal field can be covered with [Microsoft 365 Business Premium]. I highly recommend it.

Pros

Cisco Meraki SM

  • The tagging feature is quite nice. One of the tags we use is for lost/stolen devices and we have it configured to email us when one of these devices show to be online. This allows us to take actions (such as remote wipe, track GPS, etc).
  • The ability to configure Geofences is also a nice feature to have. This allows us to restrict where our clients/employees are able to utilize the device.
  • Cloud-based management offers the ease of management which simply is not found with on-premises solutions.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium

  • Outlook integration: as mentioned in the rest of the review, working with documents, spreadsheets, etc. in Outlook is seamless. Previewing an Excel doc instead of opening can be a lifesaver when there are already 15 windows of Excel open!
  • Aesthetics: while not the most important feature of any software, appearance can go a long way to make the experience feel less like a chore, and can also contribute to usability for a newer user.
  • Time Management: Outlook works with Calendars, Teams, and Contact books to make meeting scheduling and execution easy, but with 365, the cloud focus allows even greater flexibility for someone working from home or calling into a meeting remotely.
  • Memory management: on the more technical side, 365 manages the CPU and RAM of the user's machine in a way that isn't wasteful, and I personally have experienced far fewer crashes in cloud-based documents.

Cisco Meraki SM

  • Currently the application addition to Meraki has gone through some changes that make it not as user friendly as it used to be but has improved some areas of the function such as easy of deployment.
  • It would be nice to have the ability to reset a users password from the control panel. This function is currently missing.
  • Some of the navigation within the panel is not the best. It is a little obscure at times where you need to go for certain functions. For instance, to manage users, instead of a nav feature just saying, Manager Users, you have to know to click on a link simply called, "General". This could be improved.

  • More user control in SharePoint with better UI will really benefit this platform.
  • Granting Access to outside users to certain OneDrive functionality with person OneDrive app will be beneficial.
  • A program similar to Webex to conduct the virtual meeting (to include people from outside the organization) will be great.

It can fit any size organization and the support is excellent. The ROI is well worth it. If you have a multiplatform ecosystem, this tool is near perfect.

The Office 365 web-based application is very well designed and performance, in general, is usually great. While there can be a lag at times (especially on a slow internet connection), a number of elements are cached locally to speed up access. Compared to other web-based applications (especially Google's G Suite), Office 365 performance is usually significantly better - especially when dealing with large files such as spreadsheets. Office 365 web-mail is surprisingly quick and feature rich.

It simply works. The team at Microsoft is improving the suite release after release. Personally, I've installed the apps on several devices (More than 10, using Windows, Mac, Android & iOS) and the ease of use was the common denominator. I only ran into a problem one time with a very early version of Microsoft Teams, but the IT team quickly got support from Microsoft and I got the app running again with a very short delay,

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Meraki SM

It was the most affordable and provided our company with the features we needed. Even after multiple re-evaluations, we were still able to justify the on-going use of Cisco Meraki SM over the the more expensive options. The others provide some more features, but Meraki provides the most features a growing business needs at an affordable price.

I've been using Microsoft 365 and other Microsoft related products for the past 15 years. I have dabbled a little bit in Smartsheet and the learning curve just wasn't worth it in my opinion. Microsoft 365 is tried and true and in my mind there's no point pivoting to a different software bundle, even if it was a cheaper alternative.

It’s also quite simple to personalize the policies from different teams, sites, or apply rules on a certain type of devices versus another. There are many levels to safely allow managers and admins to control the solution.

  • The overall impact has been positive for my organization. If we didn't have Microsoft 365, I really believe no one could get their work done efficiently and as good as it currently is.
  • Again, the biggest positive impact it has played is the collaboration and accessibility it allows. I really can't think of any negative impacts other than financially if the product and service aren't priced competitively.
