Likelihood to Recommend

Duo Security Multi-Factor Authentication

I feel Duo Security if well-suited for a couple of use cases:
  • Any implementation of two-factor authentication whether there is an existing single sign-on infrastructure or not. This is likely the strongest suit of Duo Security due to the breadth of services supported and the flexibility provided.
  • Simple implementation of single sign-on that does not require advanced attributes management. Organizations that do not have complex needs for single sign-on and just want to authenticate the users without doing advanced provisioning and complex attributes mappings would benefit from having single sign-on and two-factor authentication in the same platform.
Complex single sign-on environments that require deep management of attributes and permissions will likely benefit from more mature single sign-on platforms.

Pros

Duo Security Multi-Factor Authentication

  • User functionality is simple. Our users love the ability to use their iPhones for the authentication.
  • User access is quick. We have had no reports of sluggishness or timeout issues when logging in and no downtime reported for the functionality in the year that we've used the service.
  • Bypass option in Duo is easy to administer when you have to make an exception for a user to bypass the two factor authentication (for example someone lost their iPhone but needs to work remotely until the new phone arrives).

Cons

Duo Security Multi-Factor Authentication

  • They offer a great and in depth process and documentation around popular systems, but that may leave you feeling stranded when attempting to use with other devices not listed. For example, MikroTik routers are not officially supported nor was it easy to connect to our LDAP servers without an additional RADIUS Server on top of the DUO Security Proxy.
  • Adding in multiple devices per user is a great feature since not all users will have their phone with them or a Hardware Token with them. It was easy to setup and use but found it difficult to tie one application to one user with multiple devices which can be used to authenticate.
  • Cost of telephone messages are a bit expensive compared to other competitors.

I find it relatively easy to use Duo Security for multi-factor authentication. Simple user instruction is enough for me even in case of issues. I am not an administrator but I have heard it is not that hard for administrators to manage the many users. I haven't used any other tools but I find it easier to use.

I've had great experiences with Duo Security's support; one story I like to tell is that once I just called the main support number and found myself speaking with one of the founders who was taking support calls. That's not something you expect or see very often. In addition to the generally good support, I had several opportunities to speak with Product Managers, and they appeared to be very interested in my insights. That's a good sign a company is trying to keep in touch with users and cares about getting their input rather than paying lip service, which is sadly what most companies are good at.

Alternatives Considered

Duo Security Multi-Factor Authentication

Duo offers cryptographic infrastructure that is more robust than SecureID does (or did). In addition, Duo has never intentionally built back doors in to their product at the behest of the NSA. Many Duo products are either themselves open source or are based on open source codebase, so it is easy to verify that they are secure. Duo's pricing is also MUCH better than RSA's.

Return on Investment

Duo Security Multi-Factor Authentication

  • Duo Security helps me sleep better as I worry less about an external attacker gaining unauthorized access to my network.
  • If there is a downside to Duo Security, it is that we did get some pushback from the end user community as they felt it was a hinderance to their workflow. However, Duo Security's flexibility allowed us to minimize that impact.
  • Duo Security provides a lot of information about the devices being used to access your network remotely.
