For WAF functionality and delivery of websites, It's very well suited for traditional firewalling, if you're doing that already, it can be quite difficult to rearchitect everything around this product. So an example of that would be if, like us, you came from a datacenter style architecture within your cloud environment and you are trying to move to a more cloud-fronted architecture. Probably the best way to put it is that can be quite difficult, but once you've deployed, it gets easier operationally. So to kind of reverse engineer everything and then do everything again can be quite tedious in some ways. But that will be specific to people depending on where they're coming from with it.

It works very well as long as your protected forms are located on specific pages. However, it is less suitable if, for example, you have a login form on every page of your website. As a JavaScript needs to be injected on every page for bot detection, which increases the number of license-relevant requests - which may increase your licensing costs

Cons
Cisco
  • Logs which are tricky to apply properly in the cloud, due to limitations of how vendor builds its environment sometimes it was hard to guess what is going on in the cloud as this solution also pulls data from these logs sometimes it can be missing some more detailed information
  • Initial data flow related to specific solutions which company can use can - mean its custom apps which can need lots of learning processes what is valid what not and how to properly allow this can of solution example is DLP

  • On a technical side, we've had a lot of deployment issues. This is not a one-sprint solution.
  • We ran into undocumented failure modes and had to rely on L2 and L3 customer support, delaying troubleshooting significantly [in our experience].
  • Accurate log ingestion is a larger challenge than one would want in a security tool.

Support is quick to respond. They help guide you through any issues you have and ensure everything has been resolved before disconnecting. Wait times can vary, but it depends on the time of day. Eventually, excellent support is reached, and you can learn a few things from them as well.

Implementation of Distributed Cloud is accomplished a few different ways, it would pay to meet with the F5 team and map out your implementation prior to acquisition to make sure you Infrastructure and Operations teams are aligned to the approach and requirements.

Alternatives Considered
Cisco
Cisco Multicloud Defense, Crowd Strike Falcon, and Arctic Wolf Cloud Posture Security Management System as a service SAAS platforms are very comparable platforms. Unfortunately for Croud Strike, they had a mishap recently that caused major downtime for many companies worldwide. I do not think that you would have to worry about this happening with Cisco Multicloud Defense.
