Cisco Nexus

Cisco Nexus is well suited for data centers more than end-users and has very robust capabilities that can be very helpful. But on the downside, knowing what "feature set" to enable or the syntax to enable to proper feature and the licensing to use that feature can take some help from a vendor or someone who really knows Cisco licensing.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

I believe the PowerConnect Switch is recommended and fits best in access and distribution for its capacity and performance. For Core, I would recommend the Dell Force 10 line. The switches have power over ethernet and can power IP phones and access points at Vivo branches. The support on the Portuguese line and face-to-face service are some differentials that I found.

Pros

Cisco Nexus

  • These switches are easily programmable. If you are looking at SDN but aren't quite there yet, this switch line is a great starting point. They support DevOps tools, which make automation extremely quick and efficient.
  • There are so many options in this product line, making Nexus a great switch for pretty much any deployment. You can stack switches or use the modular switch, whatever fits your need.
  • These switches support VXLAN, allowing for a multi-tenant network environment, and is perfect for cloud services.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

  • Easy to configure
  • Rock solid. Have only had 1 fail out of dozens in over 6 years.
  • Great features and interface.

Cons

Cisco Nexus

  • Cisco still lacks a unified operating system across platforms. So command sets are often wildly different.
  • Cisco Nexus still lacks a basic commit, deploy, fallback options to config deployment. They still force you to set a 'reload timer' (or some other [absurd]) remote recovery method. They have deployed this on their ASRs, why not here?
  • Modes are exclusive, meaning if you want to run in CLI mode, you can't leverage any of the ACI infrastructure or vice-versa.
  • While cheap for connectivity, their feature set isn't the best for campus style deployments.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

  • I've had fans burn out after the warranty period. In a way that is a positive and tells you just how long the fans last. However, it would be nice if the fans lasted a bit longer.
  • In a perfect world, it would be nice if the switches were not so loud.

Highly recommended for Data Center networks with a multi-vendor environment. As part of ACI, it natively integrates with the whole solution providing multi-speed ports with 1/10/25/50/100/400G types. Also, the platform that supports the application-centric and software-defined network concept that allows the data center network to be accessible and stretched across multiple locations with seamless data center operations and maintenance.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Cisco support is really good at being quick with their replies until they discover it's not a "network-down emergency." They start by immediately responding to your e-mails & inquiries, and the minute they discover that it's not a huge deal the tech-support employee "goes on vacation," defers you to someone else, and that person immediately takes three days to answer any e-mails... and then he just asks for different outputs.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Nexus

Cisco Nexus has a few competitors out there like BigSwitch, Extreme Networks, and others. While I don't have a lot of experience with any of their competitors, and I don't feel like it would be fair to say exclusively that Cisco Nexus is the best data center switch out there, I will say that Cisco has been around the network game for a long time. Their products perform and often surpass expectations. Also, with the upcoming and current state of the data center, SDN Cisco has not been left behind. Usually, when a company gets as big as Cisco has, they neglect innovation. This isn't the case with Cisco, and I expect they'll be able to keep up or surpass any competitor out there for the foreseeable future.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

They stack up very well against Cisco products. I feel you pay a lot for the Cisco name. Dell has most of the same functions for a lot less.

Return on Investment

Cisco Nexus

  • Nexus has allowed us to reduce the time needed to create and maintain data network configurations.
  • We're able to optimize application performance much better in the Nexus product line than under comparable IOS-based devices.
  • The cost of implementing and maintaining a Nexus-based environment is significantly higher than IOS-based equivalent devices.

Dell PowerConnect Switches

  • The ROI is great. Lost of ports and features for the money.
  • The Dell PowerConnect has allowed us to interconnect our core networking devices for a reasonable price.
