Cisco SD-WAN

Cisco SD-WAN is well designed for organizations that want to have full control or make their cloud and digital transformation easily. [Cisco] SD-WAN gives adaptability to use various transport links like 4G, 5G, or internet dedicated line, and WAN links can be used effectively. The troubleshooting is very fast and efficient and saves us lots of time, energy, and costs.

Sophos UTM

UTM works great if you want a solid, obvious firewall. There's not a lot of second-guessing as to what you are about to do with every change you make. If you incorporate their wireless access points and RED (remote ethernet device) for remote users or small offices, it's considerably much easier to set up than other comparable solutions. If you are looking to manage your firewalls via the cloud, you are out of luck.

Pros

Cisco SD-WAN

  • Cisco SD-WAN provides ultra-modern analytics, monitoring, and automation for any associate networking.
  • Cisco SD-WAN helps our organization fulfill optimal speeds and the best staging speed boost-up.
  • One of the major reasons to buy this application is that it empowers major augmentation in cybersecurity while also reducing overhead costs and simplifying operations, etc.
  • SD-WAN provides elucidation to our organization that cuts out high-priced routing and drags back on hardware costs while contributing to our business the elasticity to access multi-cloud services.

Sophos UTM

  • Firewall Protection. The protection is unmatched, setup it a little daunting, but once set up it pretty much runs itself.
  • Site-to-site VPN. Super easy to deploy so we are able to network all our sites together.
  • The DHCP server function is actually really nice, I prefer using it over the traditional way of using a DC for DHCP.

Cons

Cisco SD-WAN

  • The minimum subscription time is three years, which makes the initial investment of the projects more expensive.
  • The types of subscriptions that determine the accumulated bandwidth of the transport links generate a limitation to the additional solution that the hardware supports.
  • Access to the Vmanage administration console must be from a previously established IP address, which removes flexibility of access to the cloud.

Sophos UTM

  • Navigating the portal can be tricky depending on what needs to be done
  • It would be helpful if the SSLVPN client agent had more logging capabilities

The interface is no non-sense and easy to understand. No need for any consultants to help implement this solution. The performance is consistent and solid. Paired with a good amount of firmware and definitions, it's hard to find any fault in this product. It's interoperability with other Sophos products make a compelling argument to invest in more Sophos products.

Since the Cisco SD-WAN tools are a part of Cisco’s broader portfolio of solutions, support cross-cuts to each of our deployed components, with our company as the customer having the ability to solve our problems through the same, approved infrastructure. Their support team easily satisfies the customer’s needs so that they continue to focus on business functions.

The week link of Sophos UTM is the customer support. I haven't had to use it often, but when I do, the wait times can easily be an hour or two. Once I am talking to someone, the support is excellent. The support agents are knowledgeable and can quickly diagnose the issue and get you to a resolution.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco SD-WAN

Cisco SD-WAN is the simplest to implement with graphical user interface full configuration. There [are] also many automated parts of [the] configuration, like tunnels configurations and routes propagation. Cisco also brings its SD-WAN solution as a complementary solution to users already using Cisco equipment like Meraki and Firepower firewalls. This could be an advantage also.

I would rate Sophos second on this list right below Webroot. Webroot has an easier user interface and policy builder. However, Sophos would be on top of its UI would be improved. I would rank CrowStrike third and McAfee last. Sophos is great for complex environments that have multiple needs.

Return on Investment

Cisco SD-WAN

  • Managing to use business applications efficiently causes us to get more value from our cloud subscriptions
  • Able to use streaming services improved employees' morale and increased their performance
  • Able to combine multiple connections, helped reduce costs, and prevented us from investing in only the most expensive WAN supplier
  • Instead of relying on one supplier when one connection was down, we managed to carry on with another broadband solution
