Duo / Cisco Secure Access, by Duo

Great for organizations that need to deploy a solution that is used by a small group, given that Duo charges per account; however, be careful if you have a lot of service accounts that you want to set to bypass MFA, as you will have to pay for each one of them, as you would for any human user. Also good for small IT teams that need a solution that has a very straightforward and easy-to-use GUI. Finally, while it has a decent amount of features and functionality, don't expect it to be able to do every permutation of policy that you can think of, though Cisco is promising future updates and solutions (e.g. an adaptive product) that will address some very specific use-cases, such as MFA bypass based on user and IP.

It's a very good tool for anyone in the industry who wants to deploy Multi Factor authentication to make their company safe and secure. It is best suited for companies where a majority of the workforce works in the field; and access to company data using internet can be a little risky. Imprivata One-sign will make the connection more secure and safe.

Pros

Duo / Cisco Secure Access, by Duo

  • Duo Security has a convenient mobile app, so all our employees can implement it and login when and where they need to.
  • The app is streamlined and simple, and doesn't contain ads or unnecessary features.
  • Duo Security allows our employees to not only use it for their company login, but for external logins as well, so all of their dual-factor authentication data is in one app.

Imprivata OneSign

  • Allows admins to enable single sign-on to additional applications without Imprivata services. After a quick training session with Imprivata, most admins are easily able to enable additional apps.
  • Works well with many device types including Windows, IGEL, Teradici and many Linux based thin clients.
  • High availability and failover. Imprivata's implementation of this was one of the most well thought out and easy to implement of any solutions in our stack. It works very similar to Active Directory, but requires no real config or settings to make it happen. Add an additional appliance and the enterprise is automatically synchronized. If an appliance goes down, client software is aware and automatically switched to another appliance.

Cons

Duo / Cisco Secure Access, by Duo

  • An extra step to configure when setting up with things like O365 products whereas the native client would have been easier.
  • At the time of implementation it did not integrate with the rest of the cisco security suite.
  • Documentation was light or lacking for any lesser known products.
  • Had to configure ManageEngine as a "generic app" when doing SSO. Really need to build out the prebuilt app's base quicker for us lazy IT people.

Imprivata OneSign

  • Building the application profiles is not always simple.
  • Better application integration with Java would be beneficial.

This is a very easy application to use. The installation is simple, the user interface is user friendly. If you have been reading my review to this point, you should understand very well that I have said that this is a good product to use for multi-factor authentication. From an administrative point of view, deployment was easy as well.

Overall the support that Duo and a great company like Cisco provides has been excellent. With the initial setup and integration of Duo, the tech people we dealt with were super helpful and walked us through the whole process. They provided adequate training and resources for our internal IT team to set up and run the application. We haven't had any major issues with our end-users.

Alternatives Considered

Duo / Cisco Secure Access, by Duo

Duo is easier to use since it is an app and only needs your phone for authentication. The other products I have used in the past require a separate device. Everyone carries their phone with them so there is no need to remember to carry around another device.

None of the other toolsets offered Epic integration. I spent 9 months testing other SSO tools and found them to be slow and tied to specific tools and or workflows only. Imprivata OneSign was the only truly universal tool that I could find that was adaptable.
