Cisco Umbrella

I think Cisco Umbrella is well suited for almost all organizations. It works so well that both a small business and a large business can use it without issues. Technically it can even be used by devices that don't support the client installer, so it can basically be used anywhere by anyone. The only downside to Cisco Umbrella is that it doesn't fully support Terminal Servers, in that it won't do user-based filtering, which can be a deal-breaker.

Trend Micro Apex One (formerly OfficeScan)

Before Trend Micro OfficeScan we used Symantec Endpoint Protection and although it was very easy to deploy and to update agents it couldn't find a virus if you pointed it out with a neon sign. We were always getting hit with different viruses but since we migrated to Trend we no longer have that problem. Trend has definitely been preventing those kind of outbreaks successfully.

Cisco Umbrella

  • Filters content at the DNS level. Makes it a little harder for the sneaky ones to make it through.
  • Since this is at the DNS level, using their DNS servers (as a forwarder to your local DNS) it is extremely fast. Transparent.
  • Always being updated. Not dependent on "definitions" or algorithms - a site is either blacklisted or whitelisted.
  • Easy to implement, apply, maintain

Trend Micro Apex One (formerly OfficeScan)

  • The product has two important aspects, centralized console and an agent which is typically installed on every machine. When the product is installed on a dedicated server then all computers can readily get updated while in the same network (provided the agent is installed on every machine). This helps the machine to avoid any kind of virus attacks.
  • Even if the machines are not in the same network where the console is being run it can directly get all updates from the Trend Micro server directly and the machine is still protected. Hence, it is not necessary that users have to visit the office or internal network to get the update, once the agent is installed on the machine then they can get the update from anywhere as long as the machine has access to the Internet.
  • Once the agent is installed on the machine the users can themselves do a full scan and even check the logs themselves.

  • Keeping up to date on known malicious sites and blocking those is difficult for all vendors, but this could always be improved upon.
  • A more detailed descriptions of what is included the Security Categories would be useful. Generic descriptions are provided. For example, state lottery sites could be detailed in the description of the Gambling category.

  • Only thing I would have to say that's negative is the reporting aspect. Basic reporting is good but still lacks some details. This is a problem with many of the software vendors I have encountered in the past as well. Reporting is still much better than most.

It is very easy to stick with a vendor year after year, and it is also easy to see the faults in a product and want to change. This is the first time I have renewed with an antiviurs provider as others have been less than ideal and caused issues where there were none before, so while it isn't perfect, it is the best of the bunch currently and I am hopeful that it will continue to improve in future versions.

The product was easy to install and get running. To maintain the product is also a simple matter of maintaining lists of wanted and unwanted domains or URLs. The basic and advanced security features all do what they are intended to do with no known erroneous outcomes

We have been Cisco fans for quite some time. This product / support team lives up to expectations and the high degree of service we have come to expect from them. Whenever we had any sort of question / issue (which there were not many, as this was fairly seamless to integrate) they were responsive and helpful towards finding a solution

It has been difficult at sometimes, the support people at one point told me that they couldn't tell me information about OfficeScan because it was knowledge that was passed down from engineer to engineer. The issue was that if you used the msi for the install any further installs would require the msi to have the same exact name or else the install fails and corrupts the install. This information is not listed anywhere on trends website. Support kept trying to get me to use the exe for installs instead, but we use SCCM and msi's work better. We had to write a script to come up with a solution so that we could uninstall the software and install the new software. Trend did provide the technical expertise to help with the script and had us work with one of the developers in order to resolve that issue. So they did fix their screw up but it took a while and several complaints.

At the time that we purchased Cisco Umbrella, then OpenDNS, we did not evaluate other products. Since then, several competing products have been released. I intend to evaluate these in the future, as we have not been happy overall with Cisco Umbrella. The unexpected side effects and poor support have been very frustrating.

I have evaluated several endpoint security products over the years, but Trend Micro consistently lands in the Gartner's magic quadrant of best companies in this space, reviews well, and, most tellingly, I have had great success with their products. Every iteration brings improvements in ease of use and advancements in protection

  • Saved us lots of technician time dealing w/ Malware and virus issues, I don't think we've had a malware incident this year for example. This was the main reason we bought the product in the first place. We've renewed 2 times because we see the value.
  • Umbrella helped us reduce the risk of CryptoLocker variants infecting our clients.

  • Increased employee efficiency is definitely one of the main reasons for using this product. A lot of valuable business hours can be saved by having this product as we all know that fixing virus issues involves more than technical expertise and takes a lot of time.
  • If the employee efficiency improves then any employee facing the customer will have a much better impact and will automatically improve customer service. Having a computer in good condition is going to have a better customer service and it will also help to meet deadlines.
  • The only negative impact I would say that it does affect other VPN agents (which is mandatory for certain client applications or accessing the client network) once the Trend Micro agent gets a version upgrade. On the other hand if the agents are not upgraded from time to time it may affect Trend Micro agents' functionality.
