Totally appropriate in offices or meeting rooms where there are directors and perfect audio and image are needed, obviously good bandwidth and network quality are also required. I do not recommend it in schools or small offices since there are teams that for a third of its cost do very interesting things and with a very good performance. I think that if it were more accessible in terms of cost and licensing, we could find one of these in any meeting room.

It is well suited, I believe, in small to mid-level organization where use will be light to moderate. It is useful in a situation where both ends have the same equipment, the same model and the same software release upon them. A scenario where it might be less appropriate is single-use installations and large corporate environments. Though in the future it may become more adapted to the 'open range' of telephony systems right now the system is best when working with others of its kind. It is also inappropriate in a situation where the organization does not have a fully developed Information Technology team or arrangement with a telephony contractor to handle the devices when things go wrong.

Pros

Cisco

  • The Cisco Spark Room series has many new technologies that make this unit well worth the purchase. The auto room framing feature makes manual zoom and focus a thing of the past. The unit will auto zoom and pan to frame the screen around a single person in a conference room or zoom out and capture the whole room if there are multiple people in the conference. The Cisco Spark Room series also has an active speaker tracking system that will track users in the room and pan and zoom when that person is speaking.
  • The Cisco Spark Room series units can be cloud or on-premise registered taking advantage of whichever platform best suits your needs and current investments.
  • When the Cisco Spark Room series units are attached to 4K TVs or monitors you get the best possible resolution for video viewing with crystal clear presentations.

  • The microphones are extremely sensitive. They make it easier for soft spoken individuals to be heard clearly.
  • It is easy to operate. Once connected through Outlook all it takes is one click to get to into a meeting and two or three to bring in outside attendees.

Cons

Cisco

  • Native USB mode support across the portfolio [is] needed urgently. We need to stop selling devices that require extra USB capture integrations to make "interoperable". Please refresh with a G2 of devices supporting USB mode natively on every endpoint type.
  • [The] ability to use the Room Navigator as a whiteboard surface and to enable whiteboarding on non-board devices would be very powerful.

  • Features (it quite lacks what the other brands offer at the moment, in terms of capabilities and integration).
  • Configuration (Its webUI had a refresh and looks good, but compared to other video endpoints in the industry, it's quite difficult to troubleshoot - point of view of support staff).
  • Support (vendor support is okay, but not great).

We like our Cisco endpoints a lot. However, the technology is getting better in the Zoom room market and we are interested in exploring those options. I'd really like to see some new improvements in the room kit series such as wireless controllers and the ability to mount the room kits in multiple configurations. I would also like to see the Room Kit and Room Kit Plus series standardize their audio line inputs to accommodate 3rd party microphone and DSP solutions.

      Usability

      Cisco

Our users are satisfied with these systems as we've used Cisco for years and with the added feature of CVI subscription from Cisco, we're able to join an MS Teams meeting seamlessly from our video endpoints. We can still use CMS if needed or join a Google Meet call as well.

Overall, the assistance is adequate, but it may use some fine-tuning to stay up with the rest of the meeting technology. There are more complex needs now, thus it's not enough to have simple codec support. Cooperation between different systems is crucial.

      Alternatives Considered

      Cisco

Cisco is the only vendor manufacturing the software (Webex Meetings) and the hardware (webex devices). This is a MAJOR advantage that no other solution on the market can offer. No problem of updates, obsolescence of certain related devices/software/firmware, connections (wiring, Bluetooth, etc ...). All other solutions depend on several different manufacturers and systematically generate more problems for IT teams and [operational] problems for end-users.

Polycom Trio provides better conference call quality, picks up voice from corners of the room with additional mics for large room, better widescreen display, and it was mostly the user satisfaction which made us choose Polycom Trio.

      Return on Investment

      Cisco

      • Without the [Cisco] Webex [Room Series] devices we have in our environment, the continuity of classes during the pandemic would have been very difficult if not impossible.
      • We had an objective to ensure the seamless continuity of work whether from home or on campus and that was made possible with our [Cisco] Webex [Room Series] meeting rooms.
      • Research collaboration with external partners using our room kits during and after lockdown is priceless.

      • Since we were really looking for a device that could provide Skype for Business Online services (web conferencing/video/audio/local screen presenting) at a reasonable price point, I cannot say that this device meets all of our needs. The device has to be at least 99.99% reliable. This is about 60% there. Audio is definitely in the 99% range. Local screen presenting is probably around 75%. Video and web conferencing is about 70%. To comfortably deploy a device in the wild you really need to have 99% reliability. It has to work when its needed. I can understand an occasional hiccup, but one every other day is a too many. If you are replacing older SoundStations with an IP or Skype based audio solution, then this is it.
