Citrix Netscaler can be a powerful network appliance for environments that are fully committed and open to utilizing a network appliance that isn't made by a traditional network vendor. Administrator user experience has improved over the years and will continue to improve with the flexibility of virtual and physical appliances available for medium and large enterprises.

Cloudflare

Cloudflare is suited when your products are growing rapidly, and you want to leverage a global network with features that suit your delivery strategy. Dynamic image compression, optimization, resizing. Dynamic video optimization and compression of assets on-the-fly are some of the use cases which are otherwise tricky to address. Cloudflare is also good when it comes to API delivery to clients of different classes.

Pros

Citrix

  • Flexibility. NetScaler assumes its admins know a bit about networking and in-depth details surrounding the applications they are configuring access for/to. This being so, the range of configuration options is very broad allowing various versions' combinations of protocol patterns, expressions, rules etc., all to the benefit of the admin.
  • Granularity. Having such a broad range of configuration options available, while still allowing simple options to be configured simply. The GUI is well-stylized and navigation has a good flow.
  • Ease of control. For load-balancing of simple services right out of the box, NetScaler makes it pretty easy, compared to the range of options available in the surrounding GUI and under the hood.

Cloudflare

  • When you need a FREE and EASY TO SETUP SSL certificate on your page (if you don't have the locked locker icon when opening your page, you need it)
  • When you want to obfuscate your webpage's IP (any connection will give the Cloudflare's IP)
  • You need to speed up the connection for static content (it will not help database connections or dynamic content)
  • IF your DNS isn't good (Cloudflare's DNS is amazing, quick, easy, and works pretty well)

Cons

Citrix

  • The documentation could use an overhaul with specific examples related to the command line as well as GUI. Explanations in the documentation would also be helpful.
  • Being able to have more than just one routing table would allow the ability to leverage security.

Cloudflare

  • Some features require a bit of hand holding to deploy correctly. While the documentation is good, it could provide more examples to cover additional use cases.
  • Telephone support for enterprise customers is for emergencies only, but sometimes phone conversations are better for providing clarity.
  • Enterprise lite customers can't purchase all options available to total enterprise customers. Still, many of those additional features cost additional, so upgrading to the full enterprise means an increase in base plus the additional feature (bot management is a great example). Enterprise lite customers should be able to add these services on as well but without an increase in base.
  • It's difficult to add new services to enterprise plans. It would be ideal if customers could purchase/upgrade online and sign an order insertion digitally from the site instead of having to go through customer success.

    Usability

    Citrix

Improve on the specifics I mentioned previously and could be a 10/10 product. It is also a confusingly branded product that I have supported in two large enterprises where IT departments are unsure if the product belongs to the Citrix remote access support team or the Network infrastructure support team (it should be the later) and typically under utilized.

While there are some parts of the service that can be tricky to implement if you have a very custom site, like holepunching for cache, for the most part, the service works very well out of the box and is easy to use

    Support Rating

    Citrix

Overall, our organization's experience with Citrix support is that support can be hit or miss. Oftentimes it takes multiple attempts and much longer than desirable to obtain a viable solution for issues experienced with their products. It would be great to see Citrix invest time, effort, and almighty dollars into improving their support and bug fix process across the board.

Extensive help section which nearly always has the answer you are looking for. On a few rare occasions in 8+ years, I wasn't able to find a solution and used the email support feature (on the free plan) and the response time was a little slower than I would prefer but it's really hard to complain considering it wasn't a paid account. With paid plans, the support response times decrease significantly based on your level of service which clearly makes sense as live support can be costly.

    Alternatives Considered

    Citrix

We chose Citrix ADC over Kemp and F5 due to additional integrations with various products such as Citrix/Horizon/Monitoring tools. We additionally chose ADC due to better ease of use and ability to have the appliances be virtual or physical, with the configuration being a simple migration of code which provided flexibility to be able to do a hybrid environment with ease.

Cloudflare provides "beginner-friendly" DNS services at prices that are very competitive for firms like ours that don't have enterprise-level workloads and spend. Using Cloudflare's services is much more straightforward and simple than the competition, yet advanced functionality and capability can be availed of when the need arises. It's a perfect mixture of being feature-rich and capable while maintaining simplicity and straightforwardness and having very competitive pricing.

    Return on Investment

    Citrix

    • It has saved a tremendous amount of money and manpower by allowing for broad support without the need for a VPN.
    • The security functions within Netscaler enabled our business to pass additional IT-based audits.
    • Having a full Citrix stack from front to back makes our business look more professional both to our users and outsiders.

    • Uptime: With Cloudflare's website protection, we have avoided panic-inducing outages and downtime.
    • Reduced hosting load: Cloudflare's CDN allows us to use smaller servers and greatly diminish bandwidth usage.
    • Reduced domain renewal cost: Most of our domains could be transferred to Cloudflare, where domain renewals are as cheap as possible.
    • Increased total website cost: All of Cloudflare's features aren't free, and they increase our monthly overall website cost. The protection and other features are helpful, just not free.
