Citrix Gateway

It is a solid workhorse of a VPN client, and because of what it can connect to, it has the ability to do great things. but with sharp tools, remember to watch your fingers, as, without a solid security plan, the Citrix NetScaler Access Gateway can be dangerous to the company. [this goes for all VPN clients].

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

VMWare Identity Manager is a fantastic solution if you're looking for a "single point of access" type experience for delivering applications and data to your users. There are some features it lacks compared to some competitors, particularly when it comes to integration with other products and customization of look/feel, but we have been very successful using it to provide an easier user experience than our old systems were able to deliver.

Pros

Citrix Gateway

  • Citrix Netscaler Gateway is a solid front end for any organizations externally facing infrastructure. Nothing is impenetrable but Netscaler is as close to it as you can get.
  • Netscaler is high on available customization so it can be used by both small shops and large shops in that it offers opportunity to change most parts of the system to your liking.
  • In blending well with Citrix Xenapp and Xendesktop systems, Netscaler is particularly strong in protecting other Citrix products. Both the Netscaler and the Xen systems have hooks built into them to best use each other.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

  • It provides an "SSO" type experience for access to applications and data. Users sign in to one "portal" and then have access to whatever university systems they need to do their job.
  • It greatly simplifies securing these types of access. Firewall rulesets can be made much simpler and easier to manage, as well.

Cons

Citrix Gateway

  • Cannot use Microsoft TEAMS through Citrix Gateway. This is used daily and is a big problem.
  • Cannot access software on computer in the office, outside of the office
  • Have to use other programs other than Citrix Gateway to access BNA Interactive Forms software and Microsoft TEAMS.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

  • There is not a ton of look/feel customization for VMWare Identity manager. We have had some complaints about the icons for the delivered applications, and it's very difficult to set up custom icons.
  • Integrating Identity Manager with our enterprise authentication solution, which is based on AD FS was not immediately intuitive or easy to do. It was possible, but it took some work.
  • Integrating Identity Manager with VMWare's own TrueSSO product (to allow certificate based authentication to work with MFA) was not intuitive and took some support calls.

Citrix Gateway 8.0
Based on 3 answers
Support is pretty good and pretty fast to respond. I can't say I can really complain about the support experience I've had with them, as they've resolved issues within a reasonable time-frame. Of course, they could always be faster and better, but I think for what we pay, it's well worth the money.

Alternatives Considered

Citrix Gateway

The main benefit of Citrix above other access gateways (for example Remote Desktop Connection/LogMeIn) is that it is relatively intuitive and easy to use for both the Gateway host and anyone using the gateway to access data. It also provides more flexibility than most other products when it comes to configuring the security of the Gateway to reflect the varying protection levels needed by different organisations/for different data

We also examined several other options, particularly Lenovo Unified Workspace. The Lenovo product had some advantages over the VMWare product, particularly in the areas of customization of the look / feel and user experience. However, we have been a longtime VMWare customer, and we have VMWare VDI and other product implementations in place now that paired very well with the VMWare product.

Return on Investment

Citrix Gateway

  • As an end user, I cannot speak to the ROI in a positive or negative light. My understanding would be that is a positive as we have been using it for several years.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

  • We were able to replace several products from different companies with a single one. IDM replaced a Citrix farm as well as various VPN solutions.
  • Identity Manager has had a positive impact on our workload on our IT and Security engineers, as well as our desktop support group. We are now able to manage one location for application delivery instead of many, and security and other troubleshooting is much simplified, which means a lighter workload for those groups.
