XenServer is well suited for all scenarios for deployment for a modern infrastructure. The weak link it has is of course for classic physical hardware that has key fobs or other telephony cards which aren't properly supported in a virtualized environment. Even if you have one physical server, virtualizing is the best practice to do.

If you currently have existing or planned to have appium tests, that Saucelabs is well suited as their real devices automation is unlimited. For us, we have not made the jump to appium yet as there is no functionality to record test[s], as stakeholders want evidence of test being run, so we have had to stay Selenium to be able to record test runs on virtual devices.

Pros

Citrix Hypervisor

  • Manages upgrades to the pool of hypervisor hosts with relative ease through a console (if licensed).
  • Makes it easy to create machine templates and clones and move them around within the pool of hosts.
  • Handles failures reasonably well through the use of the pool database copied on each host

  • We have a strong partnership with our account team. They are always willing to help us understand how we are doing, what the opportunity areas are, and are there new tools and capabilities we can take advantage of.
  • They have been a big advocate for the quality work we are doing in our company. This changed some of the perception within our own organization and I'm grateful for that.
  • Analytics are awesome and always help us understand how we can do better.

Cons

Citrix Hypervisor

  • Support - if free is what you need, great support is not what you'll get, keep in mind if support is necessary
  • Upgrades - the upgrade process is buggy and problematic at best
  • Partner Support - if you're looking for a product with multiple parters rolled in, I'd look elsewhere

  • Some of the documentation is old.
  • Some of the documentation is missing for pure beginners. There are companies that throw newbies to the wolves with testing and say, "Go do this thing."
  • "This thing" can't always be done with the enormity of the new toys that are available if those toys don't have "Step 1: Power on computer" kinds of tutorials.

With the knowledge and usage of solutions from VMware and Microsoft offering more compelling cloud integrated options it makes it more compelling in many environments which I consult. XenServer is a good product and fits the bill in many smaller environments but as clients look to the cloud or a hybrid cloud it can in some cases make it a bit more difficult.

XenServer is quite usable due to the simplicity the management and installation provide for an administrator. The console for management is very intuitive and can easily be installed on any Windows operating system. There is a relatively simple web console that can be implemented as well that enhances the usability to provide service to non-administrators.

It is an incredibly easy service to use for what its primary intention is. The only reason a point is deducted is because more feature enrichment can be done around the Sauce Connect Proxy utility and the Jenkins Sauce OnDemand plugin. User Account administration also needs more work, such as the addition of user groups, rather than a simple hierarchy of users.

It's been a little problematic in the past at larger VDI deployments requiring a bit more care and feeding than other vendors. But the latest releases (6.5.x) have brought about huge improvements in the stability and availability.

Yes, Sauce labs is always there, and it is easy to troubleshoot when you are having any connectivity issue, they always keep you informed when they plan to perform any type of maintenance window on their side in advance, so you can plan and will not affect your current work. I do not recall any outage.

When running like a top XenServer is a fantastic hypervisor. There is relatively low overhead on the Dom0 so workloads get the most of the resources.

The execution of automated tests in Sauce Labs virtual machines is slightly slower than its main competition. Furthermore, the spin-up time of virtual machines (particularly device simulators or emulators) is significantly slower in our experience than its primary competition. The Sauce Connect Proxy further adds to performance decrease when used in our experience (around 10%-20% decrease when used), such that each call to the remote WebDriver instance in your test scripts can take upwards of 100-200 milliseconds.

Anytime I had to request support from the Citrix Hypervisor website I had an instant answer and it was straight to the point. I also used the forums available to everyone and always had success from both the technical staff and from the community.

While initial response time is quick, the initial question is the only thing that happens fast.
That's a standard request like adding one more error log or make sure I use the latest version of libs.
All further cmmunication goes really slow.
I am not sure my requests reach proper addresses quick enough.
In 50% of cases I receive a response in a few months (in half of cases stating that the issue can't be addressed).
It's often would be enough just to know if the fix is on the roadmap, but slow responses don't allow any planning.

Part of a training for certification to become a trainer for Citrix included an in-person training with a Master CCI. The XenServer training at this time was pretty simplified due to the product primarily being installed however you did have to work with it and mildly configure the system.

Haven't given it a real go with any online training however there are some options out there. I have taught a course following Citrix material for XenDesktop which leverages XenServer and it is pre-built so not the best for XenServer specifically for installation but configuration is mildly touched on

Ensure you review the HCL (hardware compatibility list) and reach out to the hardware vendors to ensure they support the platform and in case they have documentation that can be followed for the implementation. Also ensure the prerequisites are completed prior to implementation so that as few unexpected delays occur as you can control.

I am not sure if it's my company that makes getting Sauce Labs integrated into the team difficult or is it Sauce Labs. The process for getting Sauce Labs for a project is quite a tedious process and the information for using Sauce Labs initially is quite lacking. There is little support for getting started

The price is very good. Also, the support from the vendor in the process of implementation and maintenance is very important. Citrix offers this support. The implementation was easy, and gave us the ability to manage a large virtual infrastructure while reducing costs. The virtualization solution from Citrix offers more than other solutions had. Citrix is the best!

We have also tested out Browser Stack, which at the time was more geared towards manual testing. Although it appeared to support more mobile devices/browsers, we also wanted something that can plugin in easily with our existing Selenium test scripts. Sauce Labs was definitely more geared towards our goals at the moment which were to automation functional/regression testing and build it into our release pipeline.

The servers latest versions have made massive improvements to scalability. But from past experience there have been issues when running workloads for extended periods of time without reboot on the hosts. I would need to run similar workloads on the 6.5 release which has changed much of the bottlenecks or issues so I'd imagine its far more capable now, Perhaps able to stand near the best in the market.

this is a great tool to run automation testing, you will have a broad option of browsers and mobile devices, I am giving an 8 only because the overall performance is kind of slow, specially with the mobile devices

Return on Investment

Citrix Hypervisor

  • We noticed a true ROI within the first 2 years of implementation. The longer hardware refresh cycles save organizations like ours a lot of money each year.

Sauce Labs

  • Monthly cost was a bit higher than expected, which had a slight negative impact
  • Immediate transparency into application performance on various mobile devices was a major positive impact
  • Ability to run tests on various versions as needed was a positive impact
