Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

Large enterprises with hundreds or thousands of users across many geographical locations are ideal candidate for Citrix XenApp. For medium enterprises, Citrix also offers XenApp in the cloud which is a hybrid cloud model where management servers are in the cloud and the company can host the worker servers locally or in preferred data center setup. Xenapp is also ideal for applications that requires frequent update to users and to ensure all users have access to the same version of the application from anywhere, any device, and any type of network connection.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

If you need a quick IBM product to migrate without thinking of risk of regular AWS outages, this is the right platform to use. Also if you are already dependent on PVU licensing, go ahead with another IBM product. It is less appropriate if you are already on VMware or Vsphere, as you will identify the difference of ease.

Pros

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

  • Xenapp uses a proprietary system (IMA/FMA) to more quickly deliver the screen shots, mouse clicks, etc...being done on the servers back to the users screen. This system is faster than any other app delivery programs protocols and for most users the apps are fairly seamless and run as if they were local as to speed.
  • Xenapp does require some training but overall is not overly technical in nature which helps in quickly ramping up into managing and configuring it.
  • XenApp's one main goal is to publish applications to user desktops. It does that better than any other solution on the market. There are alternate ways of doing this including simply using Microsoft's built in App delivery product but you will encounter more issues and a less than happy user experience if you try to pay less and skip adding XenApp into the mix.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

  • Adaptable valuing relying upon size and scale.
  • The presentation is first rate. Our on-prem climate was continually experiencing slack and general languor. With IBM running everything, it's much smoother.
  • Start another group as little as one ESXi worker or scale a current bunch.

Cons

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

  • Cost - Licensing costs are not cheap.
  • Local printing is not installed by default. It took some time getting printing set up for each individual user.
  • Application compatibility is an issue when Citrix XenApp is updated, we were forced into purchasing not only an update, but also new office software.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

  • Support is horrible and or non-existent
  • Documentation is out of date and incorrect for the most part
  • IBM employees and salespeople are not aware of features or offerings
  • Does not integrate the Zerto, only Veeam and has limited options for data migration

We are highly likely to renew this product as it has quickly very integral across our organization and is useful in almost all of our core data analytics and business processes. We have to ensure the cost side is manageable and still worth it upon renewal - but don't see this as a major hurdle

Functions well in a Department of Defense environment, particularly when paired with a physical NetScaler that is FIPS compliant

It is easy to use and setting it up is simple. The only con is that the pricing is a little bit high as well as documentation is a little low; so we had to do some personal learning to be able to fully utilize the product, or hop on the phone with someone.

We view IBM as one of the most reliable vendors we have dealt with from an availability perspective. No issue whatsoever in terms of getting answers and solutions in a timely manner when we need them.

We use this product both on a stand alone basis and have also integrated it with various internal systems. We have not experienced any delay / issues when using the product in either instance - excellent and consistent performer across the board

Overall, just a great experience here. No one in my opinion gets a perfect 10/10 rating (no one is ever perfect), so 9/10 is probably as good as it gets! From initial planning to post implementation support, the IBM Cloud and professional services has been there for my group as much as we have needed them. Great job!

IBM professional services helped us plan and implement the project with great success. They guided the project from planning, scoping, pre-implementation, testing, roll-out, then production and post-production support. We were very impressed with their knowledge of VMware and really appreciated their desire to make our project a success. I would highly recommend them!

Alternatives Considered

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

Other products were more cost effective, offered a better support contract, had less dependencies on third party programs, were much simpler to configure, had better documentation, and didn't require as much hardware. We chose Citrix over the alternatives, because one of our customers required the use of Citrix for the connection of Third Party vendors.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions is higher for customers on a greenback to greenback foundation in comparison to AWS Backup. It lets clients without problems see how a whole lot of sources they're using within the cloud (a function now no longer with AWS). This enables them to store their cash and be smarter with their backup storage.

The product is highly scalable - our primary concern upon implementation was this very issue. We found it integrates with our own internal systems in a very seamless manner - have had absolutely no issues on this front

Return on Investment

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

  • Allowing staff to complete time sensitive work. i.e. Accounting processing payroll, billing. Staff meeting deadlines for client production products.
  • Time installing and configuring software occurrences is externally cut down. Such as personal profile configuration of toolbar's, files, shortcuts, etc.
  • Software licenses reduced.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions

  • It has a positive impact on the cost required to maintain our vSphere environment by allowing us to get rid of our vsphere hardware and not worry about maintenance either.
  • There have been very few negatives, but one would definitely be the open-ended cost associated with cloud products in general.
