Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

Large enterprises with hundreds or thousands of users across many geographical locations are ideal candidate for Citrix XenApp. For medium enterprises, Citrix also offers XenApp in the cloud which is a hybrid cloud model where management servers are in the cloud and the company can host the worker servers locally or in preferred data center setup. Xenapp is also ideal for applications that requires frequent update to users and to ensure all users have access to the same version of the application from anywhere, any device, and any type of network connection.

Parallels Desktop

Parallels is excellent for QA teams who need to test on a variety of operating systems, or from Mac users who need to run Windows apps in an integrated way simultaneously with their Mac apps, without a lot of performance overhead. Parallels is especially well-suited for power users who have state-of-the-art hardware running the latest version of both Parallels and Mac OS X. It is less-suited for those who cannot upgrade to the newest version of OS X or Parallels, as certain combinations of host operating system with Parallels will not work at all. It is also less-suited for those without high end hardware, and for game developers, VR developers, and others who are hoping to run PC games on a Mac at a decent frame rate. Finally, Parallels is also not suited for those who wish to run very old versions of Mac OS X like Snow Leopard (released in June 2009) which is only supported in its hard-to-find Server edition, or older than Snow Leopard, which are not supported at all.

Pros

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

  • Xenapp uses a proprietary system (IMA/FMA) to more quickly deliver the screen shots, mouse clicks, etc...being done on the servers back to the users screen. This system is faster than any other app delivery programs protocols and for most users the apps are fairly seamless and run as if they were local as to speed.
  • Xenapp does require some training but overall is not overly technical in nature which helps in quickly ramping up into managing and configuring it.
  • XenApp's one main goal is to publish applications to user desktops. It does that better than any other solution on the market. There are alternate ways of doing this including simply using Microsoft's built in App delivery product but you will encounter more issues and a less than happy user experience if you try to pay less and skip adding XenApp into the mix.

Parallels Desktop

  • USB device compatibility. This is ESSENTIAL when using some of the USB-connected testing hardware I often have to work with.
  • Parallels also makes it seamless to share data between the host OS and the virtual environment.
  • I spend most of my time in Parallels running Windows, but at times I do load up a Linux or Android VM for testing. I am able to switch back and forth between them or run multiples with little to no effort.

Cons

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

  • Cost - Licensing costs are not cheap.
  • Local printing is not installed by default. It took some time getting printing set up for each individual user.
  • Application compatibility is an issue when Citrix XenApp is updated, we were forced into purchasing not only an update, but also new office software.

Parallels Desktop

  • No update for OpenGL 3, which prevents some 3D applications from launching. The Windows-version of SketchUp is but one example.
  • Frequent (yearly) updates which don't always bring benefits (I always skip at least one version).
  • If you don't be careful, it generates 100s of useless Windows-application wrappers in macOS which sometimes take precedence in spotlight over the Mac apps I usually need to use (e.g. SketchUp, Excel, Word, Evernote...). More than once I launched Parallels instead of opening the native Mac app.

It has a good integration, including the connection of peripherals. Taking files back and forth works well and I can attach my Home drive as a network drive in Windows. There is even integration with iCloud and other macOS services. There are also a few different display modes which are useful and fleixible (coherence, windowed, full-screen with multiple screens)

We have had rare occasions to contact support about the product. Most questions were easily answered from the knowledge base. When we have had to contact support they were able to provide us with a couple of different solutions and enough resources about how to accomplish said solutions that solving the problem was easy enough.

The only advice I can provide is think about who is using the product and build the image based on the true needs of the user.

Alternatives Considered

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

Other products were more cost effective, offered a better support contract, had less dependencies on third party programs, were much simpler to configure, had better documentation, and didn't require as much hardware. We chose Citrix over the alternatives, because one of our customers required the use of Citrix for the connection of Third Party vendors.

Parallels Desktop

I have not used any other program to meet these needs and to be honest I didn't want to. Parallels had great reviews and from my research it would do what I needed, so there was no reason to look elsewhere. On top of that, Parallels is not overly expensive for the capability you get

Return on Investment

Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)

  • Allowing staff to complete time sensitive work. i.e. Accounting processing payroll, billing. Staff meeting deadlines for client production products.
  • Time installing and configuring software occurrences is externally cut down. Such as personal profile configuration of toolbar's, files, shortcuts, etc.
  • Software licenses reduced.

Parallels Desktop

  • Parallels has enabled us to move to MacOS for some of our roles, and those users couldn't be happier. Even though they are still using Windows under the covers, Continuity Mode abstracts that away, and users feel like they never have to leave MacOS.
  • We often don't need most of the features that Parallels offers, and so, it doesn't always feel like money well spent. Parallels would do well to consider additional price points to help justify its cost versus free alternatives.
  • Parallels struggles to justify why users should upgrade alongside the yearly MacOS upgrade. Screenshots and email integration are amongst the headlining features this year. Yawn.
