IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

If you're already a customer of IBM, or using an IBM product through an ASP or reseller, or you need access to the hundreds of services IBM provides, it's a great place to build out your infrastructure.
If you're an established company slowly adding VMs, a smaller provider in the vast digital ocean of choices may be better.

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

  • The pricing options for services is awesome, offering bare-metal and other high-demand services at hourly rates.
  • Softlayer offers a huge assortment of high-powered services, such as Nvidia Tesla GPU computing, high-bandwidth connection options, and highly customizable bare-metal servers
  • All of Softlayers' plans and services are fully adaptable to to fit your needs, with a huge amount of options for both the services they offer and the management options available for those services.

Cons

IBM Cloud Object Storage

  • While this platform has been around, it does take some getting used. The interface could be refined. My Firefox Browser automatically closed when selecting some options and creating new objects as an example.
  • The tutorials are a bit outdated in comparison to the screens shown. We understand the system is constantly improving. The tutorials should reflect the changes in the interface.
  • There are many pre-trained models. However, it is not clear as to how those models were trained, what bias may exist in the training data, and how a user could improve those models unless we simply have to build our own.

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

  • Support turnaround can take a while due to timezones, etc. Once had to wait on the phone on Saturday for hours in order to get ahold of someone.
  • Reliability can be better, especially if you are running mission critical systems and need 99+% uptime guarantee.
  • Communication about changes (e.g. pricing) should be more prompt and timely.

I have been working in IT sector for more than 15 years. I have worked with various vendors. IBM's sales team, support team have been really helpful. After we start to use their product, their UX design team also contacted us to get feedback from us. They are really interested about our experience.

It is adequate, but you need to be ready to argue your point - which is fair enough, I suppose, but being given the opposite of the benefit of the doubt every time does not necessarily result in an enjoyable user experience.

IBM's professional service for migrating data and implementing new cloud environment was perfect. They started to help us before we begin to bring together all data such as how can it could be best to transfer all data without problems. During the migration they watched all the process closely to prevent any failure. Lastly, after the migration, they gave us trainings on implementation.

Alternatives Considered

IBM Cloud Object Storage

I have evaluated Amazon S3 and Google's Cloud Platform.IBM Cloud Platform is well documented and very integrated with its other range of cloud services. It's quite difficult to differentiate between them all. IBM Cloud Storage is not a service I would have considered on its own merit, but with the power of Watson, which was an absolute pleasure to work with, alongside the cloud server options, I think the IBM cloud ecosystem provides something for everyone.

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

Bare Metal Servers are amazing in performance but they're slow to spin up and slow to reconfigure for additional resources. Virtual Machines allows us to be more flexible and more dynamic in our current workloads. We used to host our virtual machines at a competitor but IBM's product range is much more cost effective which increased our ROI. Also having a partner with IBM opens up doors that would've previously been shut.

Return on Investment

IBM Cloud Object Storage

  • Prior to cloud storage, we used on-premises storage devices to store and backup, and sometimes it was a headache to scale up or down the storage according to our needs. With the introduction of Cloud Object Storage, we don't have to worry about scaling.
  • The uptime is also improved a lot after the introduction of Cloud Object Storage in our organization
  • Obviously, it's a very cost-effective way to store and archive data.

IBM Cloud Virtual Servers

  • It has allowed us to have a fluid management of the data that we use in our financial forecasts.
  • Unnecessary expenses can be avoided by purchasing the payment plan that best suits the needs of the company.
  • It is a guarantee of security in the exchange of data, characteristics that we needed in our organization.
