Data Science Workbench

Organizations which already implemented on-premise Hadoop based Cloudera Data Platform (CDH) for their Big Data warehouse architecture will definitely get more value from seamless integration of Cloudera Data Science Workbench (CDSW) with their existing CDH Platform. However, for organizations with hybrid (cloud and on-premise) data platform without prior implementation of CDH, implementing CDSW can be a challenge technically and financially.

Tableau Online

Tableau is very well suited for large organizations because of its cost. It has a great visual design. It is particularly useful when there is data integration with other software required. Dashboards come out very well in such cases and help make sense out of data. These dashboards are used on a frequent basis once a baseline or a parameter is defined. Trend analysis and forecasting are a key to using this software and this is where it comes in very handy.

  • I'm not sure if this is standard for everyone but our Tableau is updated twice a week so the information may not be the most up-to-date possible.
  • There's no search function in the tool which would help me a lot if I am seeking information about a specific item.
  • There are frequent software updates which require you to completely reinstall everything.

Cloudera Data Science Workbench has excellence online resources support such as documentation and examples. On top of that the enterprise license also comes with SLA on opening a ticket to Cloudera Services and support for complaint handling and troubleshooting by email or through a phone call. On top of that it also offers additional paid training services.

Alternatives Considered

Data Science Workbench

Both the tools have similar features and have made it pretty easy to install/deploy/use. Depending on your existing platform (Cloudera vs. Azure) you need to pick the Workbench. Another observation is that Cloudera has better support where you can get feedback on your questions pretty fast (unlike MS). As its a new product, I expect MS to be more efficient in handling customers questions.

Tableau Online

Both Tableau Online and BI solutions provide visualizations. In Power BI we choose the visualization first, then drag the data into it. In Tableau, we select the data and switch between visualizations on the fly. It’s easier to jump between visualizations in Tableau. Power BI might be sluggish when working with extremely large datasets whereas Tableau online has an advantage in this area due to its extensive features.Power BI doesn’t have the ability to publish reports with all associated data which means some information can be left out of visualizations whereas Tableau online has a steep learning curve and flexible features.
