Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

Code42 is great for individuals or small businesses who want to run large/unlimited backups at a low cost. The price coupled with great customer service make this a company I hope to stick with for a very long time. Be prepared for large backups to take a good deal of time to complete (though this will also vary dependent on your internet connection). If you find the desktop client to be underwhelming or confusing, just chat with an agent to resolve your issue

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

For our use case the product is good. I am unsure if scaling to a much bigger environment would work as well as some competitor products. Reporting is sufficient in this product, although, as we use it not for our big production environment, we do not have to deal with all the big compliance rules so reporting is more of a technical purpose.

Pros

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

  • Code42 is an extremely powerful and flexible backup program with multiple options of what files to backup, how often to back them up, how much CPU should be used during backup operations (both when a user is present and away), how much bandwidth should be used during backup (again both while a user is present and away), and a multitude of other options.
  • Unlike a number of other cloud-based backup services, Code42 can backup network drives (such as those from a Synology NAS) - this makes setting up a backup system a lot more simple and cost-effective, as you can connect multiple network drives to a single computer - and backup both that computer and the attached network drives.
  • Code42 keeps your backup history indefinitely. This means that if you delete a file, a year goes by, and you need to recover that file, you can use Code42 to do that. Most other cloud-based backup services only keep history for around 30 days before deleting them from the backup archive.
  • Another powerful feature, Code42 allows you to not only back up to the CrashPlan Central cloud, but also to an external drive or network drive. Essentially, you can use Code42 as an all-in-one backup solution for both local and cloud backups. The local backups are heavily compressed with data deduplication to save space on the backup destination, thus allowing you to keep a long history of backups.
  • The cloud-based backups can be heavily encrypted with a custom made encryption key that even Code42 can't recover.

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

  • Creating G-F-S backups of virtual servers in a completely automated fashion.
  • Restoring data easily when needed, either as specific individual files or entire servers (and the run-from-backup option is just neat, although we've rarely had use for that).
  • Storing Data in a de-duplicated, compressed format has allowed us to store many many backups in a space that is many many times smaller than it would take to keep multiple full copies of each server.

Cons

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

  • The first backup is taxing on the system. Some users report that their computers become almost useless. You can set maximum usage and idle time usage parameters but the original backup is still time and resource consuming. Be prepared.
  • The initial setup is lengthy and confusing. If it weren't for the walkthrough with the technical support administrator, I would never have attempted it.
  • Feedback from the admin portal is non-existent. We had multiple systems whose backups wouldn't start and finally realized, through other means, that we were out of licenses.
  • Users can stop and disable the service.

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

  • You can only backup virtual machines.
  • Although you can easily set up NAKIVO, the more specific or complex your configuration, the more reliant you become on tech support. Knowing Linux would be a big plus with these types of configurations.
  • Updating the software could be a little more user-friendly.

It's great. It works, it's cost effective and it's easy to maintain. I don't see us ever changing away from Nakivo Backup and Replication to any other product. We are very impressed and satisfied with the results.

The good news is that we have not had a need for very much support at all from CrashPlan Pro; however, their support model while adequate does not set them apart from other vendors. CrashPlan Pro has sufficient and adequate support but is not always the easiest to use or find what you are looking for.

As with any support, it can always improve, but since the result has always been getting my issue resolved quickly I can't complain. Nakivo support has been great to work with when I have needed them, which hasn't been often.

Alternatives Considered

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

We compared CrashPlan with other choices and they were either too expensive or didn't have the backup capacity we required at the time. For lack of a better solution, we were very close to signing with Mozy, and this was years ago when CrashPlan was still a new player in the market. I found them at the eleventh hour and started the product comparison. Mozy couldn't offer us unlimited storage space and when we found that CrashPlan could, it was almost a no-brainer. Carbonite was a close contender as well, but if I recall correctly, they didn't offer enterprise level pricing that we were looking for (note, this was years ago and their current offerings may be different).

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

Altaro offers a competitive price but not VMware support which is our preferred virtualisation product. The Vembu Cloud DR is more expensive to implement, less flexibile (requires a Windows server) and it is a product with a lot of space for improvements, however excellent support when needed.StorageCraft Cloud Backup same as Vembu is pricier and less flexible in deployment options.

Return on Investment

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

  • The licensing cost is negligible on our budget, but the return and peace of mind is significant. It has already saved our butts against ransomware viruses and we've lost data in natural disasters before - now we're prepared if it happens again!

NAKIVO Backup & Replication

  • Provides a robust service at an affordable cost.
  • Intuitive web interface along with the technology itself provides a path for quick, easy restores.
  • Not supporting S3 compatible storage for off-site storage of backups has required us to add an additional piece of software to the workflow.
