Cohesity

Cohesity is best suited for a highly virtualized environment, although they do have agents for bare metal. But who runs non-virtualized workloads these days anyhow? Not any organization which would invest in best class backup, anyhow. We find that the search features make file-level restores so much easier -- now a partial filename is all we need to get going, and we can see a file's change history by date so we no longer have to hunt for the last changed version. You will want 10GB network capability for this solution to really shine -- each node has dual SFP+ connections for data.

Druva Phoenix

Durva Phoenix is well suited for the VMware platform and has great restore functionality during disaster recovery. We use a different VM platform so our disaster recovery has a longer timeline if there is a critical failure as we need to get a base OS loaded before we can restore the VM data to it. This is the tradeoff between an expensive VM platform and a near free VM platform. Druva Phoenix is well suited to file version recovery if a previous data state is required by your employees or customers. Very quick to restore.

Pros

Cohesity

  • Easy to use and setup new backup and restore jobs.
  • Extremely fast recovery time, can spin a VMware backup VM up in well under a minute.
  • Granular recovery search options, easy to find specific files or systems to recover (or SQL DB).

Druva Phoenix

  • Recoverability: The speed with which backups can be located and restored is the best I've ever seen.
  • Visibility: it's easy to keep an eye on what's successfully backing up and, more importantly, what's not.
  • Availability: Anywhere, anytime; if you need to recover data in a jiffy you're not tied to a specific local server interface - the web console is easily accessible from anywhere.
  • Simplicity: Configuration of backup jobs is straightforward and guides easily followable.

Cons

Cohesity

  • Replication performance - We needed support to provide some customizations in order to get our replication to work properly to another offsite cluster. We have been told that this issue is fixed in the newest general release.
  • Support - I would characterize the support as very good, but in a few instances I could tell my support agent needed to go higher up his chain to get clarification on features. I believe Cohesity is rapidly growing their support infrastructure as they put more hardware in the field.

  • personally, I find the menu structure to review a particular backup job cumbersome
  • we need the ability to have API driven (agentless) backups of Azure server workloads
  • for IaaS, phoenix must be cost competitive to platform backup services in AWS, Azure, etc.

The user interface is very intuitive and gives a good overview of the status of your backup jobs. Its a full html5 environment which can be used in very browser and is available on every device through the use of private connections to the office. When going to implement Cohesity it is as easy as putting it in the rack and configuring your network. The environment does the rest. Once configured new nodes can be added by configuring them with the correct network. We use it in a VMware vCenter environment with vCloud Director on top. Since the latest version vCloud Director is an official source for your backups. This means that resoring to vCloud Director is a posibility as well. This makes the multi-tenancy and self service capability for our users an easy to use function. It can be implemented as a plugin within the Cloud portal for users to leverage. The path to vCloud Director support took a while but now that we are there I can give it an 8.

Certain backup solutions can be cumbersome on how they actually work. Where that's properly deploying hardware or software that will house the backups. Druva is different where the software and infrastructure is completely managed. All we needed to do is deploy agents and proxies and point the backups to Druva Phoenix

They are always friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The support is easy to reach and the reaction times are on point. Several times I had called with my system being down and the person who answered the call would require a support rep call me back. Some of these call backs would be 1-2 hours later. When needed, the support will scale up to deliver the right support for the right cases. When asking for detailed information about a problem they always help you to understand the problem and the underlying causes better.

We haven't required much in the way of support from Druva after our implementation, however the few times we have had to contact them they have been fantastic. They've quickly offered solutions to our issues and followed up that they were working properly.

Alternatives Considered

Cohesity

We looked at Veeam and although it's a great product when we priced out the licensing of both primary and disaster datacenters it became much too expensive.Rubrik is a great product and very similar to Cohesity. In the end, Cohesity had a secondary storage play as well as a better UI and better compatibility with lower tier cloud storage. We also like the way Cohesity did protection jobs vs Rubrik's virtual machine centric backup.CommVault is a product we still use today due to its massive features and the ability for bare metal backups. Cohesity does a much better job in the area of UI simplicity, virtual backup ease, and ease of management.

Carbonite is unstable. It would continually fail, shutting off the service. Because the backup service wasn't running, it wasn't "failing to back up" so we had no idea when the service would randomly, without indication, shut itself off.

Driva has proven simple and stable.

Return on Investment

Cohesity

  • It has freed up 40 hours a month of our service desk staff since they were able to stop focusing so intently on tape management.
  • We have gained time back on the engineers since they are not working tickets 10 hours a week just on backup issues.

  • This is a necessary service to keep your information safe. I would not say that there is a tangible ROI unless you reach a point where your server gets attacked and wiped-out. Then, you can recover your information in an easy manner, which could represent a potential several-thousand-dollar savings.
