Highlights

Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery and Veritas Backup Exec are both Data Center Backup Solutions designed to archive and restore business data. Veritas Backup Exec used by many large enterprises due to its scalability. In contrast Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery is popular with mid-sized to large businesses. This may be because Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery is designed to handle large, complex data infrastructure.

Features

Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery and Veritas Backup Exec both include essential data backup features such as disaster recovery, but they also have a few standout features that set them apart from each other.

Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery provides endpoint protection features in addition to virtual machine backup. The endpoint protection provided by Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery makes it an ideal choice for organizations looking for an all in one solution. Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery also offers a variety of integrations that allow it to fit well into existing IT infrastructures.

Veritas Backup Exec is a highly scalable data center backup solution that makes it a good choice for growing businesses that don’t want to have to change to a different solution as they grow. Additionally, Veritas backup Exec is well equipped to handle enterprise workloads, to the point that it is used by over 90% of Fortune 100 companies.

Limitations

Though Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery and Veritas Backup Exec both include robust data backup features, they also have a few limitations that are important to consider.

Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery isn’t as scalable as Veritas Backup Exec, which may make it a poor choice for the largest enterprises or businesses experiencing rapid growth. Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery is also difficult to implement and manage, so businesses should expect users to need training before getting the most value out of the technology.

Veritas Backup Exec provides powerful data backup services but doesn’t include endpoint security. Businesses looking for an all-in-one software may need to consider other solutions. Additionally, Veritas Backup Exec can be a pricier option compared to Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery, which may make it a poor choice for smaller businesses.

Pricing

Commvault does not provide exact pricing for Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery, though interested businesses can reach out to the vendor for a quote.

Veritas Backup Exec offers three pricing tiers. The Bronze tier is $39.00 per month and includes basic data backup features. The Silver tier costs $49.00 per month and includes Linux support, and application archiving features. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

I feel that Commvault's Active Directory Recovery and Testing of the recovery could be improved, but this could very well be a situation where I am not fully understanding the scope. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is spot-on in all other areas and will be a perfect fit for anyone with a decent-sized IT footprint.

Veritas Backup Exec

My rating would have been higher a few years ago, but nagging problems, primarily noticed since the switch back to Veritas, has increased my dissatisfaction. It is still a solid product for the SMB market. It is a wide variety of options that will fit into just about any scenario that you can think of. Licensing complexity continues to be a issue. It offers solid performance, reasonably good support and a decent interface once you are used to it

Pros

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

  • Commvault is the Swiss Army knife for data protection in an Enterprise environment. You name the environment and Commvvault has something to protect it. Very helpful in this on-prem/off-prem world that is developing into a DevOps world.
  • Improves our Disaster Recovery
  • Starting to utilize for data migration for VMware in places where Zerto is too expensive

Cons

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

  • Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery has developed the concept of plans that work great in smaller institutions but can hamstring large enterprises by the limited flexibility. There are situations where plans appear to be forced into decisions. Ideally, providing the ability to disable plans would be beneficial.
  • The security model is granular in respects to permissions and ability to implement it for a single object (client, user, job). Implementing the correct collection of permissions can sometimes feel like opening a padlock. This appears to be a great place to implement a wizard for guiding administrators through desired behaviors and building the appropriate security role.

Veritas Backup Exec

  • The user interface can sometimes be sluggish and hang between options. The minimum spec is 2Gb but if running on a dedicated server I think 4Gb is recommended
  • As more companies seem to be entering the backup software market, Acronis is very aggressive on pricing and even offer discounts if you are replacing other backup solutions, the Backup Exec pricing plans have become a more expensive
  • Our version is an older 2014 version and has inadequate support for VM backs

It is serving it's purpose and for companies that have a smaller IT staff, it is not time consuming to manage. Support for the product when needed has been very good and they are responsive when tickets are opened for support. The product is scalable so as we grow we can easily increase the resources as needed on the backend.

This software is a mess in my brutally honest opinion. I've spent more time babysitting this software while backing up 20 servers than I did with Veeam backing up 600+. I've had multiple jobs run fine for weeks at a time that just randomly fail out of the blue for seemingly no reason whatsoever. There's no intuitive way to chain jobs, so automation becomes somewhat more problematic if certain jobs depend on other jobs. The forever incremental feature feels tacked on since the merge operation merges all your incremental jobs into the most recent backup and doesn't have the option set a limit on how long to keep your point in time restores.

Commvault is an enterprise-level tool that we use to backup all kinds of workloads. I have implemented Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery in many Enterprise-level, Corporate banks and financial companies to mitigate their data loss and compliance with their audit requirements. I have implemented it across many platforms such as MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, AIX, Exchange, VMware, Azure, Office 365, Hyper-V, Loutas Note, Windows FS/Unix FS backups and many cloud storage and virtual environments. Commvault DR option as well. We especially used Backup replication (Dash Copy), VM Replication (Live sync) and DB replication and VM life cycling process. Customers like the Commvault CommCell console, it is a single console solution.

It can do a lot of things on paper and sounds terrific, but in practice it doesn't do any of them well. It can easily be sold to non-technical minds and C-levels, but of all the backup solutions I've used in the last 15 years of my career, Backup Exec is easily the least fault tolerant. Unless this software is a sunk cost and you're on a shoestring budget, I recommend almost anything else. Jobs fail often with obscure error codes and the KB articles in the Veritas support portal are a mess. Within 30 days of a fresh deployment I've logged more tickets with their support than I did in 3 years with Veeam.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery support is a Gold Standard for us. We are a ESP customer and have a designated Support Account Manager (SAM) & a Technical Account Manager (TAM) who we meet with every other week to go over any existing issues and upcoming version revisions release. But of course not all companies or organization will need this type of level of support but we have proven that this works for us due to the shear size of our environment and the number of offices we support.

In the few instances of having to contact support, our overall outcome was always good. They would have received a better score if the wait time was less, but I attribute this to the timing of support calls - it was during the previous owner's time. We have not had to open a support ticket since Veritas Backup Exec took the product back over.

Plan well and make sure you collect all the required information and details before going for implementation. Organize it in step by step or break the setup into different modules to make it simple.

Alternatives Considered

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

I was not part of the decision to adopt Commvault, and having developed and used many other backup/recovery tools I was a little skeptical that it could do everything that we needed, but I can say that I'm glad that they chose Commvault. It has delivered even more than we had counted on.

Veritas Backup Exec

If your company is looking at changing solutions or currently does not have any, Veritas Backup Exec is the way to go. Do yourself a favor and try the 60 day trial, you won't be disappointed! Very simple to use and has a great GUI, much better than what the competition has to offer.

Return on Investment

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery

  • The ease of use and reliability of Commvault have enabled us to support the entire environment with less personnel than other products. We can support hundreds of clients and 500TB of protected systems with a single person.
  • Their per TB pricing can get rather expensive often forcing you into an agent based pricing model and that can be less that ideal to mange.
Keith Luken | TrustRadius Reviewer

Veritas Backup Exec

  • Veritas Backup Exec is good for single file restores. We have had to restore files from a few months back without any problem.
  • Veritas has saved us money by reverting work that was overwritten by a past employee.
  • Sometimes tapes can be overwritten by accident when you inventory it for restore, which can be an issue.
