Compuware File-AID

It's pretty good at creating an extract of a whole table, but not the best at grabbing all related tables in my experience. Pretty intuitive on setting up your test data categories. I also really like that it can either run via ISPF or via Topaz which was included with our purchase.

SpiraTest

I think SpiraTest is well suited as a test suite, but in situations where the team is already using multiple products from one particular provider, it may be better to go with that provider's test solution. This is because integrations are very important nowadays, and should be considered when picking your project management software. It should be noted that management selected SpiraTest primarily due to the low cost of the test software. I'm less familiar with other test software in the field, but if cost is an issue, you should take a look at SpiraTest.

Pros

Compuware File-AID

  • Extract/load data from one DB or table to another masking the data for testing.
  • Compare extracts against each other to ensure good baselines.
Sean Zef | TrustRadius Reviewer

SpiraTest

  • A clean view of test case steps, expected results and the ability to record a result for each step quickly on one page per test set. This really helps testers work through executing manual test cases.
  • Hierarchical structure of releases and builds, requirements, and test cases.
  • Can quickly build test sets and/or test runs per build/release.
  • Simple identification of each test case, requirement, test run, build, release, etc.

Cons

Compuware File-AID

  • I find it more obtuse to use than IBM Optim.
  • Related tables are difficult to incorporate.
Sean Zef | TrustRadius Reviewer

SpiraTest

  • Training can be difficult to find at times.
  • Basic reporting can become very verbose unless you set lots of filters and parameters.
  • The ability to customize some of the verbiage in the application would help bridge the gap between translating what SpiraTest's testing terminology is and the company culture uses for testing terminology.

Support has been amazing compared to Optim. Further, new features are very regular with File-AID - I can't remember the last time Optim had a significant update. File-AID support is very receptive to feature requests and reported bugs, including sending out hotfixes quickly.

Alternatives Considered

Compuware File-AID

Optim is more user friendly in how it operates, in my opinion. It's less obtuse to figure out how to extract and mask the data required compared to File-AID. Further, Optim is easier to gather related tables, by far. I do prefer using File-AID via the Topaz GUI much more than using Optim via its GUI. Finally, I personally believe that File-AID is significantly faster to run than Optim - this could be a configuration issue.

Return on Investment

Compuware File-AID

  • Saves time creating production like data for testing.
  • Keeps that data safe from developers and need-to-know only.

SpiraTest

  • SpiraTest can be improved in terms of its dashboard and reporting. This will be really helpful for the management as well.
