The most important aspect is that Comscore offers one of the largest analytics suites available on display, mobile, video, and TV. Due to the scale of its data, it also provides a benchmark for analyzing the advertising industry. Finally, I like the fact that I can track site performance of my company's digital properties.

Marketo

Marketo is well suited for an organization that is a bit larger, with a need to reach a lot of customers and on several platforms in order to justify the price. If your team also has someone well-versed in HTML there's a lot of great design functions you can make happen in the platform. Marketo also has a trigger email function which allows you to set up emails that automatically go out when someone matches the conditions and I find that very helpful rather than sending batches of scheduled emails.

Pros

Comscore vCE

  • It helps in advanced reporting capabilities such as overnight reporting of audience demographics and integration with Comscore’s new multi-platform audience data.
  • It has the ability to combine metrics with other digital campaigns involving display and rich media to provide an unduplicated view of audiences across multiple ad formats.
  • It has global and cross-geographical campaign reporting capabilities.

Marketo

  • Marketo is very simple to learn and affords quick time to value and a simple UI for those that are used to less capable or more tech-reliant competitor platforms.
  • Marketo plays very well with Salesforce CRM in my experience, but be cautious with how you customize your Salesforce data model or architecture, as those decisions can have implications for Marketo.
  • Smart campaigns and smart lists are an invaluable resource. They're like mini workflows at your fingertips, requiring no SQL or coding language. Just drag and drop; the possibilities are nearly endless! Example: In an email send campaign, drag and drop a step to exclude customers that have previously received an email related to a different campaign. The platform will recognize these leads in real time and remove them from the flow. It sounds elementary, but from experience, it is not easy, or not possible, to do things like that in other platforms.
  • Little or no reliance on IT for support. Marketo allows Marketers and ops team members to administer the tool without needing developers.
  • Marketo Sales Insight - I don't know where we'd be without this! Our organization relies on it heavily to send nicely-formatted templated emails to sales prospects, and quickly remind prospects of events and webinars of interest to them with just a few clicks from the sales owner.

Cons

Comscore vCE

  • Due to the large array of products within the Comscore platform, it is difficult to search in the platform.
  • It also lacks the capability to track programmatic traffic which is unfortunate considering the impact it is having in the digital advertising industry.
  • The help section has not been elaborated very well making it difficult to navigate through the platform and fetch the right report.
Amit Gumber | TrustRadius Reviewer

Marketo

  • Landing Pages - The Landing Page editor is a little clunky. It was built prior to the email template builder which has more functionality that it could take to be improved.
  • Analytics - Marketo's default reporting is very simple and tactical. For more detailed reporting there is a paid add-on you can rely on to pull through meatier results.

The renewal process with Marketo can be very frustrating. The first year I managed the renewal for my company, I received a quote from the rep with additional products that I had not even inquired about. Additionally, as a result of an increased database size that required us to go up one tier level, we saw our price jump by over 25%. This year, we are decreasing our database size by at least two tier levels and so far I'm disappointed to see that there will be very minimal savings, despite having much less data to store.

There's a fair amount of flexibility, but as you start moving beyond the basics and get into more complex programs, it gets a bit cumbersome; for example, flexible drip campaigns that can customize / change content based on triggers after the initial start. Some way of normalizing scoring so older, less intensive users don't overshadow newer, more-intense users. Etc.For a basic setup and taking control of the user flow from contact to lead without leaks, Marketo is awesome, once you've got the core data governance and standardized processes in place.Template design is difficult - designers find it restrictive and there is a LOT of debugging needed, with finished templates sometimes behaving very oddly in some environments - adding / deleting code snippets, disabling some scripts - not enough to break it, but definitely some odd behaviors

There are performance issues that make it seem like it's down sometimes. The backlog of campaign triggers etc. can be a real issue. The issue is probably more around performance than uptime.

There are times when it is slightly slow for us, where we sit on a screen waiting for it to load. This could be our internet since we have had the same issue occasionally with other systems, but it is enough to make you crazy.

On multiple occasions we've had Marketo support (technical and license based) issues. Technical issues were minor and resolved within a day. License based issues (even things encouraged by Marketo for partners, like provisioning another license) took WEEKS. They actually took so long to respond that the client we were working with withdrew from the contract because they were no longer convinced Marketo was capable of supporting their business. As an agency trying to sell the software, you can only explain away so much before they just made us look silly.

Our account rep stopped out in Lincoln, NE to ensure we were properly set up and running. This was very much appreciated. I was very, very new at this point, so I can't comment very much on the extent of what was taught because I was still brand new to the company and the system

I had never used Marketo prior to taking this job so online training was my starting point. I was able to follow along, it was interesting and quickly and efficiently taught me what I needed to know without a lot of fluff. It was far from boring and really helped me get my hands dirty with Marketo.

1. Have a content marketing plan to run in parallel with the marketing automation installation--you'll need a lot of content to make full use of Marketo's capabilities.2. Work with sales (and ISRs) to define and document a workflow--build your Marketo installation around how you do business--not figure out how to apply your business to the tools3. Spend time of data cleaning--both an initial project as well as a strategy for ongoing data management. We found some change manaement issues (no more appending ZZZ to the first name to identify contacts who have left the company, for example, or prohibiting the entry of "info@company.com" email addresses).4. Find some champions in the sales and ISR teams. You'll have both fans and detractors--work with the fans to build some success stories

Alternatives Considered

Comscore vCE

We have selected Comscore because in Google Analytics it is not possible to reprocess the information: you have to be careful when tagging campaigns, creating filters to segment information in profiles, etc. Any error can cause the data to not register correctly and the data cannot be reprocessed. If they are lost or not registered correctly, nothing can be done to recover them. The same would happen if the tracking code of any of the pages on the website were deleted.

Marketo

HubSpot and Marketo are designed for larger marketing teams, but Marketo has more marketing options whereas HubSpot can sometimes feel more like a content marketing tool. You can build mini-websites that you can use for A/B testing. You can also build and optimize content for different audiences with HubSpot. One highlight of HubSpot is the ability to personalize content to specific leads. Marketo feels more like a digital marketing suite of tools than a content marketing suite. ActiveCampaign is better suited to small business and links messages and email marketing into one. You can also run your CRM from within ActiveCampaign.

As we have grown, Marketo has grown with us. We started with simple single email campaigns and are now doing complex campaigns with multiple emails and tracks that we send a contact to if they take certain actions within our emails. We also have a complex integration with several systems and have the visibility into our marketing activities throughout our organization.

Return on Investment

Comscore vCE

  • The business problems that we are solving using Comscore data are vast.
  • The most notable being that we have more up-to-date data to provide our clients. When they are running TV ad campaigns, they want to see exactly how it performs.
  • Having to wait 2-3 months at a time for data isn't helpful, so with Comscore, being able to show them within a couple of weeks is excellent.
Amit Gumber | TrustRadius Reviewer

Marketo

  • Massive increase in efficiency for sales/service/customer success reps -- automation manages their workflow and communication letting them focus on what they do best and increase customer satisfaction.
  • Much faster deployment of programs and campaigns.
  • Big gains in conversion and revenue through better nurturing, lead scoring, lead management.
