ConnectWise Automate

LabTech is well suited to MSPs who manage mostly Windows Systems. While LabTech can manage Mac computers, the feature set is limited. Also, LabTech does a lot of different things so if someone is looking for a solution to a single problem (monitoring, remote control, etc.), LabTech could be overkill. LabTech is an ideal tool for MSPs or larger organizations to manage many systems. As LabTech is a complex system, it requires a certain amount of care and feeding so LabTech may not be an ideal solution for a small organization with not a lot of systems to manage.

Datto

Datto works well for smaller shops that just need something that will work without needing a great deal of day to day work on it. I only login to the device periodically to see where we stand on space and occasionally when we need to restore something. The offsite datacenter backup which is hosted by Datto works well for us particularly as we do not have our own offsite tech to use. In larger departments other solutions will possibly win out based on required features and setups but for the 1-10 man IT departments the Datto solutions fit in well.

Pros

ConnectWise Automate

  • Automation
  • Customization
  • Flexibility
  • Managment
Jack Skinner profile photo

Datto

  • Very easy to work with: web interface is extremely simple and documentation is readily available.
  • Combines local and cloud backups in a single package, making implementation easy.
  • Wide variety of restore options - download VHD, restore individual files, bare metal, virtualization in the cloud, and virtualization on the appliance itself.
  • Performs automatic backup testing. Datto creates VMs from backups in its cloud and sends email notifications of VM boot process. While this feature should not completely replace manual backup testing, it is still very useful to check the integrity of the backups.

Cons

ConnectWise Automate

  • Scripting required to use
  • Can sometimes screw up and cause an over-run on memory
  • Backend can be hard to use

Datto

  • The cloud transfer is not as efficient as it could be. When backups flagged to the cloud are queued, they don't get released individually, but you have to wait until the whole package gets transferred. This is especially bad if the bandwidth is not good enough, and this also affects the capacity of the devices, because the points flagged cannot be deleted by the retention, and the backup appliance could get full because of this.
  • The account security for the user is not good enough. The users and passwords have to be created by another user, and there's no 2FA. As a partner, we do have that functionality, but the direct users don't have it available.
  • There's not enough reporting, which would be useful for compliance. There's a need to be able to log the activities that a user does on a device, the restores performed, and updates on settings. This has not been covered yet.
  • While there are enough people for support, sometimes the support team won't be as proactive as you would expect. They work within the limits of the functionalities of their tools, but they could get stuck troubleshooting the environments as a whole. Since the Datto client works with Windows features, other applications can affect the status of the client, but the support team has limitation in the way they troubleshoot these scenarios.

Support and the Speed of supporting the latest technology is the main reason for not giving this a 10. But the product is powerful and flexible. The best way that I can sum it up is "You can get out of it what you put in to it"

Usability is great. The web interface is simple and easy to use. While various options are available for client backups, it is very easy to re-use settings of the existing client, so adding new clients is a very fast process. Configuration of the agent on the client-side cannot be easier as well. Datto dashboard provides an overview of the client status, and email notifications can be configured for various events.

It used to be great, but then they broke reporting, speed and responsiveness with version 11 and the new Patch Manager. It's really bad and their support people are way behind on fixing so many bugs. They have really gone downhill. If they don't get it together soon, we'll start looking around.

Support

I have worked with Support for many years on the product. At the time of writing this review, it takes almost 5 business days just for a support ticket to be assigned to a Tier 1 support agent. Then workflow seems to be that the Tier 1 Support requests logs and support files that are no longer relevant to the situation as a long enough history isn't kept and the files are too large to send via their normal methods. Then once you do get them the information, they start going through a level 1 check list and you go round and round on that. Once you are through the checklist, then start going back and forth with a higher tier support with other things that they should check. Once you are done there, then it gets escalated and things start to happen as they should of when you first submitted the ticket over a week ago.

All of that said, they are starting and trying hard to improve on support and I have seen a slow change. Most of these issues are due to a transistion of Support and hopefully will be resolved in the very near future.

As I gave the Datto appliance a 10, without question there is room for improvement when it comes to dealing with people. Sometimes there are issues with any manmade device, and the poor soul who answers the phone may not have all the answers we need, so we may be bounced around from time to time to different techs. Nothing too bad though, which is why I gave them a 9, as everyone has a little room for improvement.

Online Training

The Online training has been re-done and needs a lot more work. When you look at training in different roles, it shows a lot of the same topics but no explanation to what is different about them. Several times that topics are the exact same, but they make you re-take the same information for a different topic, instead of marking that you have already completed that portion of training.

Implementation

Start small and learn the in's and out's before making policies and rolling things out company wide. Ask the questions of why if you don't agree with something or your company does things a different way. Usually they are done a certain way for a reason. Start simple with roll out and slowly enable or add on the functionality that is needed.

Alternatives Considered

ConnectWise Automate

When we looked at Kaseya it required even more setup than Labtech at the time and we did not feel we had the resources to implement it. We still feel we made the right decision selecting Labtech over Kaseya. At the time we were using Zenith InfoTech which is now named something else I believe.

Datto

Shadow Protect being the closest on this list, none of the other stack up against what Datto can provide in terms of technology and being able to quickly recover from a disaster or data loss. What brings Datto above the competition is their level of customer support from their first tier all the way up to their senior teams.

Return on Investment

ConnectWise Automate

  • Given that CWA is an industry standard - we hire more and more techs with pre-existing experience - which decreases our training time for new techs
  • Having a single pane of glass for managing a diverse set of data, tools and end-points is a time-saver
  • Strong integrations with ConnectWise Manage and ConnectWise Control is a huge time saver

Datto

  • Datto has increased our backup revenue due to it just working with less management required.
  • The downside is having to fix a lot of the issues ourselves, or escalating an issue which can take time. This does put a dent in revenue.
