I think this CMS is best suited as an enterprise level system. For small, or simple sites, there are better options, but for large high-traffic sites, this is a great CMS.

Episerver CMS

Episerver CMS provides a very well rounded system that will meet the needs of most businesses, in my experience. The biggest draw-back that I've seen with the underlying system is the response time in the back-end. Being on the digital experience cloud allows you to spread the load between services, but our experience has shown, even with a distributed network, the response time on the back-end can prove time-consuming and have delays in loading for content writers/editors. If there's a lot of hands-on, constantly, you will need to make sure the architecture has the response time your team needs.

Pros

CoreMedia

  • Allows many staff members to contribute content to various portions of our website, and allows our Electronic-Communications staff to delegate tasks to these various staff (diffusing the work-load).
  • CoreMedia allows for easy creation of different types of content (like teasers, articles, download objects, links, etc). Permission levels can be set, so only certain staff can upload content such as photos, videos, or audio files.
  • The CoreMedia workflow process is easy to understand and follow. Once a staff member has submitted content for publishing to the web, they can then see who it's been assigned to for review, and at what time. You're able to leave detailed notes and stay abreast of where the workflow is at any given time.

Episerver CMS

  • Innovation - EPiServer is constantly looking at ways to improve their product and partner with organizations that can develop add-ons to improve the overall features of the core platform. For Example: SilverPop (marketing automation) and Celum (digital asset management).
  • Content Management - It may seem obvious that a WCM product should manage content/reuse well; but, let's be honest, not all products do what they claim to do well. In this case, EPiServer understands the core functionality and has created product that is intuitive and exceeds customer expectations in this area.
  • Previews - EPiServer has built-in templates (emulators) that allow you to easily confirm how your content is going to be displayed on a variety of devices before you publish your content. This is advantageous as it eliminates the guess work and need to redo content (or even code) after you've gone to production because you weren't able to thoroughly test it before hand.

Cons

CoreMedia

  • Early learning within the company was slow.
  • We elected a customized version of CoreMedia - which in the end may not have been the best decision.

Episerver CMS

  • The website, including the editing portion, seems to be down quite often - so that we cannot make changes - or it allows us to make changes but then doesn't properly save them.
  • Customer service and user support is lacking. We've reported problems to them, yet it never seems to get fixed.

CoreMedia continues to refine and deliver new features. They also explore new technologies and trends, like social media integration. The platform is solid and growing. We are also slightly locked into using CoreMedia. Migrating such a large amount of content to another system would likely not be feasible or prudent.

The main reason would be because EPiServer is a great product and there aren't many other content management systems that are worth the effort it takes to re-implement an entire website on a new platform. EPiServer also seems to have a more modern approach to the features they offer and the overall design of the workarea so it's very likely that they will continue to improve in the future

Set aside more time than you think you need to migrate content. That is the hard part. Implementing the technology is easy.

Alternatives Considered

CoreMedia

While CoreMedia has a better workflow, django CMS has a much easier user interface, wysiwyg editor, and is superior on every other level. Django CMS is easier to teach and support, easier to manage and develop, and provides much more flexibility in the development and design areas.

Episerver outranks these products in most cases. There are some functions in each product that you would love in Episerver but when you sum it up Episerver is the greatest :)

Return on Investment

CoreMedia

  • Increased employee proficiency compared to nothing at all. I really don't have anything else to compare it to though.
  • Reports from Core do not help/.

Episerver CMS

  • The cleanliness of the product is too damn good, hence efficiency is doubled and gets work done much faster and with a clean mind.
  • APIs and libraries or modules implementation is easy which helps during make/test setup time.
  • Nothing negative as such for now. We need to get more used to it.
