Craft

Craft is really well suited for any size design team - I have used it within a team of 3, and within a team of 30.It helps with collaboration within the team, and between external teams through 'sync' with Invision. It increases efficiency of using Sketch with things like 'data', 'duplicate', and 'stock'. These tools not only make designing faster, but also more realistic, allowing us to 'test' our designs sooner.

Planview LeanKit

Planview LeanKit excels in any scenario where you need to visualize and organize work to be done. You can feasible even use it as a personal to-do application. We use it as a way to keep track of our current topics in management meetings as well as a Scrumban implementation of project management. However, when processes and work is very file- and data-heavy, using Planview LeanKit is less appropriate as there's just not way of doing a sensible file management.

Pros

Craft

  • Craft is built to digital products developers, so its workflow is great.
  • It has a very nice interface and is a beautiful tool.
Raphael Sanguinete | TrustRadius Reviewer

Planview LeanKit

  • Ability to color code cards based on type, giving better visibility to the variety of tasks a team handles
  • Ability to set deadline dates and have those dates easily visible
  • Flexibility in design the kanban board. It is easy to add a lane or make a change on the fly. Work doesn't have to stop and a long process created to make simple layout changes.
  • Movement of cards is easy as well as the ability to connect cards to show dependencies.

Cons

Craft

  • Text formatting is sometimes difficult and can break your flow of writing.
  • The button for creating another level is exceptionally hard to see and poorly placed.
  • Copying rich text out of the app pastes it with an odd styling.

Planview LeanKit

  • The formatting of what they call "cards" could be better. They can be clunky if you have a lot of text in just one.
  • Needs better support for media, attachments.
  • Not the most pretty interface in my opinion, though it works.

LeanKit isn't the best designed Kanban system I've seen, but overall it's pretty usable. The boards I've used are pretty complex, so it can be difficult to find things. I found that searching and filtering for specific cards was somewhat of a challenge. Dragging a card from one lane to another is kind of a fun way to get things done though.

Alternatives Considered

Craft

Craft was originally developed in response to ExpressionEngine's shortcomings. While ExpressionEngine has caught up in some regards, it still looks and feels a bit unpolished by comparison. Additionally, ExpressionEngine's vendor has never gotten UI right - not on their website, nor in their CMS. Craft remains easier to use, more polished and provides a wider feature set in its base install (without needing plugins). As for WordPress - while I recognize its massive popularity, I find its reliance on themes, third-party plugins, along with security shortcomings, make it a poor fit for the larger custom projects we build. On the other hand, if you want to throw up a passable website in a day, you can't beat WordPress.

Planview LeanKit

I think that LeanKit is very similar to Asana's Kanban feature and Trello, but is much less sleek looking than Asana. Asana's clean and sleek UI makes me enjoy project management much more than LeanKit. It might sound silly that the UI makes so much of a difference to me, but it really does. Trello is also sleeker than LeanKit, but I still prefer Asana because it has more customization options and a better interface. We are actually going to look into switching to ClickUp because we wanted something with a better UI. ClickUp seems to have a great UI with a lot of customization options.

Return on Investment

Craft

  • More accurate mockups for clients that take less time than without using Craft.
  • Increased collaboration within and between teams by providing more immediate insight into active design work.
  • More enjoyable experiences while designing, because the tool set opens up new work flows that do not existing natively in any design software.

Planview LeanKit

  • Our team meetings are more direct and quick to get through thanks to the better visibility of the workload
  • Easily being able to move cards between team lanes gives instant visibility to where the responsibility for the next step is needed.
