Criteo Dynamic Retargeting is well suited for every kind of action related to hot leads / customers regarding your business. It's a good way to increase the conversion rates of the funnel and always works really well for that kind of audience. On the other hand, you need to ensure that you have built a minimum size audience to let the algorithm work properly.

Facebook [for Business] is suited for businesses seeking to target social media users in specific locations like towns, counties and districts. On other platforms, you are only allowed to target large cities , states and countries.
Facebook should also be the top name on the list, for businesses looking for cheaper advertising rates.

  • The first strenght of Criteo Retargeting is the user-friendly platform, where you can easily manage your budget and analyse the performance.
  • Secondly, the CPC based model is great advantage of Criteo compare to some competitors.
  • Finally, the post-click attribution. It is more trustworthy and tenable than post-view.

  • Segmentation is HUGE. You can segment by almost anything you want, be it demographic, sociological, behavioral... you name it. You can also create targets based on your visitors and their actions. Even custom lists.
  • They are very good at optimizing your campaigns automatically. This is so important because it will improve your ROI in several multiples otherwise
  • Managing ads in general works fine, and the data, even though is not exactly as accurate as Analytics, it's pretty decent.
  • Gives you placements and different ad types so you can get the most out of it.
  • Pixel and catalog integration are very powerful. You can almost instantly start tracking and catalog fetches your site daily for updates.

Cons

Marketing Solutions by Criteo

  • Level of control over ads - Most features of Criteo can't be managed directly in the dashboard. That can be a problem when you want ads adjusted quickly, for example, if you make a change to your logo. Customer Service has to be contacted in that case.
  • Cost - Of the several retargeting platforms we tried, Criteo was the most costly. This is in terms of cost per click and cost per conversion. In the end, we just couldn't justify paying substantially more for a similar ad network to Google just for the level of customer service.
  • Reporting - There is no reporting provided automatically, and user data is gated; it was difficult for us to ascertain anything about the audience we were serving ads to, and even basic geographic data wasn't available to us.

  • The amount of text allowed on images can be frustrating since it will include ALL text in the image regardless if it is part of the copy or on something random in the background of the image
  • Labeling ads and ad groups can be frustrating as we often had them default to generic titles which we would have to go back and edit. A mandatory field would be helpful, however, that might not be popular opinion as that much detail is really just a personal preference.
  • The constant emails from their sales team to "help you improve" your results are a little much.

Their UI and platform were super easy to use, their customer service was top tier, and the service they provide is pretty unique. I think this is a great solution for publishers to have in their mix. It has been a great experience overall and I would highly recommend working with them.

I gave it this rating because it is so easy to learn to use and you are able to grow a following quickly by knowing when to post and who to post to or how to get in front of those prospects easily, and using those prospects to reach even further without any additional processes on your end through the sharing from your engaged readers.

I've found the Facebook for Business support to be hit or miss. For billing questions they're timely and helpful. For complex questions about specific services I've often received a longer wait and a less helpful experience. I'm often redirected to their docs, which are often not particularly helpful.

If you don't want to display your feed to your boss before going over scheduled posts for the week, use the Business site and it will be less awkward instantly. Having someone lean over your shoulder is always a bit awkward, you think about how you smell, maybe consider offering them gum because they have bad breath

I prefer AdRoll when it comes to retargeting. We selected Criteo due to the client requesting we test it out. Criteo is much harder to manage and to date has provided less than stellar ROAS. Criteo, however, is much better than using the Google Display Network on AdWords. Retargeting through Google was a nightmare to manage (so many inappropriate and irrelevant placements!) and led to very few conversions.

Facebook for Business

Generally, we like Facebook business the least compared to other ad platforms and scheduling platforms. Adobe ad cloud for instance feels more user-friendly and is easier to see how ads perform and pivot accordingly. It does cost though, so it goes back to your budget and what you're working with. If you don't have the budget for a platform and just money to run ads and boost some posts then Facebook Business can still get the job done, it just takes some finesse.

  • Bad ROI at start (first month) - When you launch a new campaign, COS is very high for a few weeks. I thought it was going to take less time for the algorithm to be effective.
  • Good ROI after that - After a few weeks, our COS started to get better!
  • More traffic
  • Some people complain about being too much retargeted

  • I haven't had much ROI from using Facebook for Business, and unfortunately, other local businesses I know haven't felt that they got much ROI on their paid ads either.
  • The good point of Facebook for Business is that I can still look into who is interested in my products and build around my audience that way.
