I would recommend Criteo for savvy marketers who want to increase their conversion metrics and are going to be optimizing [their campaigns] every day. The way to get the most value out of the platform is by constantly iterating with a focus on the metrics and keep doing adjustments to the campaigns.I would not use it for campaigns focused on brand building, traffic, or awareness objectives.

Kevel (formerly Adzerk)

For ad serving, implementing client-side header bidding with prebid was actually easier with Kevel than it is with Google Ad Manager in most cases, particularly for display advertising. I found though that with more complex integrations (like video), there were more solutions and code snippets available with other larger ad servers (Google).

  • You are able to access to their data pool, to build audiences with just an email list (encrypted and hashed)
  • Easy to use platform and easy way to analyze data from the dashboard. Everyone could manage the dashboard easily enough to surf through the data and understand the performance. Also you have the help of your account manager.
  • The powerful algorithm drives good results for your company, without too much effort. And they are continuously improving with new features (design types, campaigns, platform, mobile / app products ...)
  • Support for testing all of the integration of the events to check if data is well received. Google Chrome extension, testing mode inside the dashboard with error detection and also the help of your account manager + technical stuff.

Cons

Marketing Solutions by Criteo

  • Tags and feed implementation : difficult and hard to understand for project and dev teams.
  • The budget part is not clear, especially when the account manager does stuff on his own. It should be possible to change the budget from a period and not month to month.
  • Now we have no information about the creative parts. It will be better to have a vision of which ad is working better than another and on which website.

Usability is a big plus for Criteo. The platform is really intuitive and easy to use. The only thing I would like to see improved has to do with more granular reporting to analyze the same variable in more than one dimension and be able to boost our optimization efforts.

I think for performance campaigns, Criteo is a great solution and it has to be on the plan as it will work very well regardless of the format (video/display) or setting (mobile/desktop). I think for branding campaigns, the solution and product still needs to be developed further to improve my rating.

Criteo is easier to get up and running, and provides a better user experience on their dashboard, but the product comes at a premium. Compared to other, similar retargeting tools, Criteo was more expensive. We used Criteo for over a year, but ultimately paused our campaigns to work on a less expensive platform with more control over our ads and network.

Kevel (formerly Adzerk)

Kevel was an easier initial implementation for header bidding with prebid. The team worked alongside us to make sure everything was operating as intended. We ultimately switched to Ads Manager to access AdX demand and other features that were not possible with Kevel (for instance, EBDA). There are benefits to both but I appreciated the attention we got from Kevel support when we were first working through the implementation. We are still using Kevel for many things, just not as our primary display advertising ad server.

  • A reduction in overall ROAS attributed to retargeting. In the past 3 months, we are yet to hit our 8x ROAS goal.
  • The platform absorbs way too much time on our end. Employee efficiency has decreased due to using the tool.
  • Poor customer service. Their style is much more reactive than proactive, and when it comes to choosing display partners, this is a very detrimental quality to have.
