Likelihood to Recommend

Critical Mention

Critical Mention is excellent for media monitoring across platforms including TV, radio and online. It is easy to grab and tailor video clips and share. The reporting function makes creating thorough reports simple. Most importantly, the customers service is unparalleled. Any time I've ever had a question or challenge, it has been handled quickly. I would suggest that you make sure to take the time to thoroughly set up your searches to be sure you don't miss anything.

Radian6

Radian6 in my opinion is a very no-nonsense type of tool. I know what I am going to get. So in a sense of where it is best suited, I feel as though it is best suited for clients that need a basic read on volume for their brand as well as spikes in conversation over the last 3 months. Radian lacks an automated analysis that is usable. As with other tools, automated sentiment tends to be crap. When comparing to Sysomos, I tend to lead on Radian more because I see them as similar tools though Radian gives me more information. Sysomos has an influencer/'authoritative' portion that the basic Radian tool seems to lack, however, from prior vendor conversations (Im not sure if they have changed it since), Sysomos' was primarily based on twitter followers

Pros

Critical Mention

  • Critical Mention has been a useful tool over the past dozen years. We have used it to help political campaigns, non-profits, private business and the like to understand where their message is landing and understand if they are hitting their target audience. Our report shows them real-time results for radio, tv, online and even social media.
  • I believe the Critical Mention reporting and reports are far superior to other tracking products we have observed by other in the past.
  • Their online services and support are awesome and when you are looking for a product and value of the product Critical Mention gives you both in one package.

Radian6

  • The amount of the information that radian6 can pull from multiple social platforms is absolutely phenomenal. Its just not only the pull but the way the information can be presented in dashboards was way good. It helped us understand in various aspects of our social presence.
  • Multiple profiles helped us to break down the Big/Huge social buzz cloud to smaller and more manageable pieces. This helped us concentrate on the lows and helped us to plan better on turning them to highs.
  • Radian6 allowed us to follow thru the crowd trends with the latest information presented in a single view. This also helped us to collect the social opinion on the product releases.
  • The ease of use, one need not be an expert to start using this platform. The interface is easily understandable by anyone.
  • A keyword can be edited quickly to tailor the needs and the results were quick.

Cons

Critical Mention

  • Saving new broadcast clips as reports. Sometimes it's confusing because I don't see everything I saved under the same report.
  • 60 day limit on how far we can go back on our searches. Sometimes I need to pull a clip from 90 or more days ago and I am unable to go that far back.
  • Media alerts about commercials. While the search is set up to capture certain words, sometimes it is a bit much to go through all the commercial content.

Radian6

  • Radian6 does not pull data from a handful of major sites that provide extremely useful content, such as LinkedIn groups, Amazon reviews, and Google+.
  • Radian6 also does not capture comments made in response to Facebook fan page post or pick up posts proactively made by fans to pages unless the fans make all their content public.
  • The query search for Radian6 basically consists of "and" "or" and "not" as filtering tools but doesn't provide other valuable filtering options such as narrowing your search to specific sites or links.
  • Radian6's website is entirely in Flash, which makes your computer slow down quite a bit.
  • The collaboration process has some glitches. For example, when a user creates a campaign or keyword to track, everyone on the team can see it but will not have the ability to modify anything.
  • In addition to the license fee, there is a per-topic profile fee, which is where you tell it what data you want to pull in. If you want to separate data, there is only so much you can do within one topic profile. If you go over your data limit, you'll be charged!
  • It's very expensive. If you're a small - mid-sized company you can probably get the same results with a much more affordable software.

Likelihood to Renew

I gave this a 5 only because I do not make the decisions to renew. When I used this at my previous company, I also recommended to the decision maker to renew this tool as it was a crucial piece to the overall client objective

I found an alternative solution to be better (first Jive, and then Spredfast because it has a better listening component and engagement capabilities). Radian 6 was expensive to scale. The B2B company I worked for targeted several industries - ie. robotics, medical device design, automotive. Radian6 charged both by keyword and user. It was impossible to scale due to cost restrictions. Therefore, we could only use the tool to monitor and react to certain product keywords and not proactively to get involved in important conversations in various industries. Instead we went with a service that integrated with our social intranet. This allowed the social team to quickly find internal experts based on their profiles, host a conversation about the social media post internally, and the publish a response back out. This was better than getting user licenses and training thousands of employees on a tool they may only use a few times a year or trying to manage the social media monitoring process via email

It's great for quickly looking up a specific clip, but this platform makes it difficult to select and accurately report on a high volume of clips

• Would rate this a 6. The User Interface is pretty intuitive, but the platform was still considered pretty intimidating by our non-technical staff when they first saw it. It took a while to get used to it and feel comfortable. There was quite a lot of setup work in the beginning (for example, we had to build our own reports using a canned report as a template, and this was not simple). Although it took a while to get it setup correctly, it’s quite intuitive once that work has been done.

Look, Critical Mention follows up on an or phone call immediately or in the AM the following business day. I have called them after hours and get a live person to work through any issues that may have come up. Support seems to be job one with Critical Mention.

I don't remember having to reach out to support quite often when working with Radian6. However, before I started in that position working with the platform, my manager relayed to me that the customer support for Radian6 and Salesforce overall was quick and efficient, and that they usually got back to him within a day or so

• We initially received dedicated online training for our team which was delivered by our account rep. This was pretty effective since it happened after our data had been loaded into the system and it had been configured for specific needs our organization. The training was perhaps a bit shallow though, as it was only an hour long. Online videos are available to be taken individually, and these have been useful.

Implementation was pretty simple. Just a matter of giving the account rep a list of our search terms and having him set the system up to pull the data we wanted to see. Once this had been done, we tweaked it with his help. Process was pretty smooth, although there was some back and forth until it worked the way we wanted.

Alternatives Considered

Critical Mention

We used to use a program called TVEyes to track for coverage. Critical Mention can track more sites, is more user-friendly, and has specific audience numbers for most of the broadcast outlets it tracks. It also is easier to search on Critical Mention over TVEyes for most items.

Radian6

We use Union Metrics for reporting purposes, but for social listening they are not as robust as Radian6. The same scenario with Sprout Social. We used them as part of Meltwater, but didn’t continue with the service. Radian6 has not been glitchy, provided quick results from keyword searches, and produces ready to report dashboard results

Return on Investment

Critical Mention

  • Every week the department I am a part does dozens of searches on Critical Mention. We use it as our primary search engine for all things broadcast.
  • One negative aspect is that we do not know where Critical Mention gets their audience viewing numbers from so we just have to take it as their word.
  • Another negative aspect is that we are limited on the amount of time that one clip can be so we have to share several clips of the same show with our clients.

  • Monitoring social brand awareness is not something you can consider to have a meaninful impact in your business ROI short term, however it's a must for taking care of long term relationships and customer intimacy.
  • Radian6 connects with other analytical tools like webtrends, Google Analytics, etc..however it's not directly linked to a revenue driven platform, you can´t see the immediate ROI generated in the tool.
  • If you bet for social relationships you should consider this tool, no question on that. Social Commerce might be of course impacted postively by the proper use of this tool.
