CrowdStrike Falcon

There aren't many scenarios where I wouldn't recommend CrowdStrike. You'll have the ability to create protection policies for different parts of your environment so that sensitive machines have as much protection as possible, and low-risk machines aren't overly locked down. The only reason I can't see someone choosing CrowdStrike is over a matter of budget. It's not the most expensive, nor is it the cheapest.

McAfee Endpoint Security

It provides great web security and will protect your devices against viruses and malware when paired with other security software and hardware. For instance, we have multiple layers of security set up so if McAfee misses something then one of our other barriers will catch the infection or intrusion before it reaches the network. I would not suggest using this product as a standalone agent because I do not think it will be as effective when working by itself. The dashboard also makes it convenient to manage devices, policies, and settings from wherever you are so it's an ideal solution for any IT department to use. I would just suggest using something else as a backup so your network isn't left vulnerable.

Pros

CrowdStrike Falcon

  • Detects and automatically blocks dangerous behavior on endpoints that could be indicative of malicious activity, like executing programs from the deleted items folder, executing a SSH command in silent mode from different places in the OS, etc.
  • Monitors endpoints continuously for known malware, evaluates dangerous behaviors and blocks execution based on risk tolerance settings, uses AI to draw correlations on multiple attack vectors, and has a human malware hunting element to detect known or newly detected attack vectors.
  • Is easy to deploy across a large organization and manage centrally by as few as 1 person part time.
  • This was the fastest and easiest implementation of an enterprise grade security system I have ever done. I pushed software to the endpoints on a Friday afternoon, and was complete by Noon on Monday, as each workstation came online, the installer completed, and we were protected.

McAfee Endpoint Security

  • The detection level is better than Windows defender.
  • The e-policy orchestration management console that comes with it enables us to oversee the devices remotely, run scans on the endpoints, and update their virus definitions forcibly.
  • It sends regular updates and therefore each endpoints stays safe individually.
  • Furthermore, it has a very easy to understand interface.

Cons

CrowdStrike Falcon

  • Falcon isn't continuously scanning the machine, if something is downloaded and viewed as safe it won't be re-checked later.
  • More dashboards and information on vulnerabilities on the machines would be helpful.
  • More reports that could be given to executives would also be beneficial. There are some now, but the options are rather limited.

McAfee Endpoint Security

  • My biggest flak with McAfee Endpoint Security is that it is quite resource-intensive. It does tend to make the system a little slow. You get security at the expense of your machine's speed.
  • Even though the drive encryption makes the system more secure, it takes a lot of time to first enter the very long password, and then for it to decrypt the whole machine. This sometimes clashes with Windows update and causes a lot of complications which leads to boot loops.

The support is pretty good, and I haven't had any issues with getting the highest quality technical support when there are issues. Tech support representatives that I have dealt with know the product quite well and have solved many issues that I have had with the product in the past. The only issue I have with support is that it can be quite expensive.

Alternatives Considered

CrowdStrike Falcon

Business requirements, mainly. The most important/useful items we appreciate is ease of use and customer service and this product exceeds expectations in that regard. Other offers cover legacy systems and remain with that solution. However, the granularity that you can introduce to an environment is outstanding, all that without losing the simplicity of use.

McAfee Endpoint Security

If you have Cisco tools and equipment globally in place and just for the clients additionally McAfee you should have a deeper look. We wanted to install end-2-end security over all networks and hardware. This was a big point for Cisco. For a managed client team, Cisco is a step which they do not want in the first round.

Return on Investment

CrowdStrike Falcon

  • A significant increase in responsiveness to data security incidents.
  • The frequency and extent of data security issues have been drastically reduced.

McAfee Endpoint Security

  • The first thing is protection. According to my career I have to always deal with the internet. If I was not a user of this software many times I would have lost all of my documents due to a virus attack. Many times we plug USB devices to a PC and after scanning the USB I saw many threats using this software. So if I am not a user of this software I would have lost my documents many time. Thank you McAfee Endpoint security!
  • Another thing is this software is always concerned about our privacy. It means this is not only a virus blocker it’s anti-hacker software. They place extra effort to our privacy. They auto detect email and block the emails which email trying to steal our data.
  • Another thing is the save our passwords. So we don’t have to waste our time to type passwords we can simply enter an account through facial recognition or fingerprint. So no one can access my account without my permission. It’s helped make my work easy and I don’t have to memorize my password.
