Crownpeak DXM

Crownpeak DXM is particularly well suited to Customer centric, CX Driven digital implementations. It has plenty of 'out the box' features which we use on a regular basis with our clients, but it also acts like a headless CMS with the ability to share content across different platforms and integrate with 'best of breed' CRM, PIM, Commerce tools for example. We work closely with Crownpeak to scope and define CX driven solutions for our clients, and it's especially useful when we need to be interoperable with other systems and tools in the customer communications and digital business toolkit. We've used it in B2C commerce situations, in B2B closed environments, and with brands with large volume product inventory management.

Umbraco CMS

Umbraco CMS is the perfect tool for a company that is looking to keep their website updated. The simple to use tools and templates means updating and creating new pages is easy. The WYSIWYG editor is a nice feature, however, for accessibility, there should be some more guidance on what is suitable to be used on the CMS.

Pros

Crownpeak DXM

  • Having all the tools all in one place - you don't need a separate quality tool or asset management tool for instance
  • Ease of use is great because even non-technical users can get in and add content after minimal training.
  • Personalization and A/B testing built in makes a HUGE difference in how marketers build a site.

Umbraco CMS

  • Plugins - as an open source CMS, Umbraco is very customizable and flexible to the needs of the organization
  • Publishing - Umbraco has powerful tools for publishing
  • Media hosting

Cons

Crownpeak DXM

  • Initial setup is a nightmare, and pretty much impossible without an expensive professional services engagement or an outside consultant.
  • It is difficult to create personalized content, and the module is not particularly robust, at that.
  • The user interface is extremely confusing for business users, and time-to-productivity is high.

Umbraco CMS

  • Umbraco can initially be challenging for new users with limited or no development experience. After initial installation, there is a lot more work required to 'see' a site.
  • Umbraco isn't stable. For example, even on a fresh new site sometimes you'll get errors when trying to save something in the admin panel. It's not common, but it happens often enough to be annoying.
  • No out of the box contact forms. Umbraco sells their forms plugin that we've used in the past, but the plugin is disappointing. It isn't well maintained and it's very buggy. Making a new contact form with the paid plugin can take a lot of time to get everything right (fields, validation, confirmation emails, etc). This is especially frustrating for new users.
  • Documentation / resource links frequently 404. Umbraco seems to change their site URLs often enough that, when you encounter an issue, you're likely to find a number of bad links in Google's search results. This makes it difficult to research solutions to a problem.
  • Posts often go unanswered or without resolution in their community support forums. Hopefully this will improve as the community grows.
  • The update process is clumsy at best. Many people are familiar with the simple WordPress upgrade button for the core and plugins. This doesn't exist at all for Umbraco. Instead, you'll need to select specific files to overwrite and potentially update any old code references.
  • Migration between development environments is clumsy. Umbraco offers a premium plugin to address this because, as they state on the premium plugin page, deployments are "complicated, headache-inducing"

Working in the admin panel (adding / reviewing / editing content) is very slow. The public facing site speed is dependent on what the pages are doing and how well the code was written (whether it is optimized for speed).

The support we receive is great. Our inquiries are responded to very fast, and we have had no turnover on our account for nearly 5 years which is almost unheard of. This means our support team has a lot of domain knowledge and familiarity with our unique set up making troubleshooting and break/fix inquiries fast and easy.

Online training is often based on older versions of the platform. So, you'll have to fill in the gaps on your own.

As for the development teams simplistic approach gives the developers the flexibility to implement their code rapidly with the use of component based templates. The CMS is easy to set-up and can be ready within a few weeks compared to months in a traditional WCM. User configuration, roles and managing access is smooth; active directory configuration allows users to access the platform with their corporate credential which is a simple set-up.

Spend the time to wireframe the content structure prior to diving in. This helps speed the process of implementation and it serves as documentation for end users.

Alternatives Considered

Umbraco CMS

There is not really an alternative when it comes to CMS based on ASP.Net (MVC4 with Razor). There are a few frameworks, like Booststrap; however framework is not content management system. I will compare it to Drupal, because the second one is well known. Against Drupal, Umbraco is very clean and fast framework/CMS. It does not have as much of big community, support or range of plugins as Drupal.

Return on Investment

Crownpeak DXM

  • I'm pretty sure it raises our back-end development costs by making the development process (of creating input forms and producing outputs from the content) more complicated and painful than it needs to be.
  • It helps lock our clients in to us because not a whole lot of agencies have Crownpeak expertise.
  • It helps our clients not have to deal with their own IT teams, which they tend to dislike working with.

  • thanks to their good SEO, we have more leads
