Cyberoam

We've been happy with them for the most part for use in our K-12 segment. Please also know that the review is for thoughts and sharing and does not represent or infer a product endorsement by myself or on behalf of the University of Hawaii system.

VMware SD-WAN, by VeloCloud

Using VeloCloud is best suited when you have multiple internet connections of a similar caliber. The reason for this is because VeloCloud's main purpose is to provide the best connection when using multiple internet circuits. If you don't, it's a waste of money. I also like it because our ISP supports VeloCloud, and they have a department to help us make changes.

Cons

Cyberoam

  • Without mentioning an alternative brand, there is another leading company who has updated with firewall UI quite a bit. They offer an expanded line-up to meet a wider array of needs including specific appliances for web caching, proxy servers, and other products that have the same and familiar UI across the products. Each of the products does have some overlap so that customers can choose the right appliance for their use case.
  • After being acquired by Sophos, we saw our year-over-year costs escalate significantly since our original maintenance contract. They should consider revisiting the pricing, especially for education.
  • They should consider a current market analysis and see how the market is changing and adapting with other lower cost appliances for their product line up.

  • They need to be a little clearer when it comes to licensing. And from the orchestrator, I should be able to see what licenses I currently have associated with every device and their expiration dates.
  • I feel even though a VM firewall can be added to a specific appliance, a full UTM firewall built within the solution would be great.

There are still some glitches that need to be worked out. As an example, I rebooted a device at one of our branch locations and it just died. That should never have happened, and I've only seen this happen when a company needs to improve hardware on some of their lower-end models.

At the time Fortinet wasn't open to changes and ease of use for our type of use case. Since then, the company has come a long way with ease of use of their product. We selected Cyberoam because of its UI and ease of use specifically for CIPA compliance for K-12

Return on Investment

Cyberoam

  • Positive - time and cost savings on management
  • Positive - still best in class for ease of CIPA compliance for K-12
  • Negative - escalating costs are pushing us away from the solution

  • Eliminate the cost of an MPLS circuit.
  • Ease of deployment: the amount of time saved when adding additional sites to the solution, especially when you have a profile already built and when you add a new VC you just associate that profile with that appliance. Again, in a matter of minutes, you can have a new site up and running.
  • Since there is not true firewall built-in, you would have to either purchase a third-party firewall or the virtual firewall that is supported by Velocloud.
