Darktrace

Darktrace would be well suited to any environment really; the only constraint would be the budget. The cost scales on the number of devices to be monitored by the product, so it can be quite expensive in larger environments. Any company that would benefit from having 24/7 monitoring of their network would find that this product would suit that need perfectly. It can also create a number of reports, which is useful if you have any requirement to present periodic figures and statistics for your network. There are also additional features available and in development such as Antigena, which can be configured to allow potential threats to be automatically mitigated; it can block connections to a certain address, using certain ports, or it can enforce "normal behaviour" where it will only allow a machine to communicate in a way that Darktrace has observed before and considers normal. This has huge benefits particularly for 24/7 organisations where you don't have the ability to have someone monitoring the network personally at all times, as it could stop a malware outbreak in its tracks.

Trend Micro Apex One (formerly OfficeScan)

Before Trend Micro OfficeScan we used Symantec Endpoint Protection and although it was very easy to deploy and to update agents it couldn't find a virus if you pointed it out with a neon sign. We were always getting hit with different viruses but since we migrated to Trend we no longer have that problem. Trend has definitely been preventing those kind of outbreaks successfully.

  • It did an ok job of analyzing and collecting data. It used a span (mirrored) port and then using its own algorithm developed flow records.
  • It did an ok job of segmenting traffic into networks - not always correctly, but ok.
  • It tried to identify devices by type - once again, it did ok, but not that great.

Trend Micro Apex One (formerly OfficeScan)

  • The product has two important aspects, centralized console and an agent which is typically installed on every machine. When the product is installed on a dedicated server then all computers can readily get updated while in the same network (provided the agent is installed on every machine). This helps the machine to avoid any kind of virus attacks.
  • Even if the machines are not in the same network where the console is being run it can directly get all updates from the Trend Micro server directly and the machine is still protected. Hence, it is not necessary that users have to visit the office or internal network to get the update, once the agent is installed on the machine then they can get the update from anywhere as long as the machine has access to the Internet.
  • Once the agent is installed on the machine the users can themselves do a full scan and even check the logs themselves.

  • False positives. Darktrace uses "AI" to create its alerts for "unusual" or "malicious" activity. It is very common to see an alert for completely benign and normal device behavior - PC tries to print for the first time in a while, for example.
  • Antigena actions. To some extent, this is a continuation of the previous point. Darktrace can break the network connectivity of the suspected device automatically. The excessive number of false positives makes administrators reluctant to use this feature, though. Also, the default Antigena actions are not relevant to real-world problems as I saw them in my experience with Darktrace.

  • Only thing I would have to say that's negative is the reporting aspect. Basic reporting is good but still lacks some details. This is a problem with many of the software vendors I have encountered in the past as well. Reporting is still much better than most.

It is very easy to stick with a vendor year after year, and it is also easy to see the faults in a product and want to change. This is the first time I have renewed with an antiviurs provider as others have been less than ideal and caused issues where there were none before, so while it isn't perfect, it is the best of the bunch currently and I am hopeful that it will continue to improve in future versions.

Any time I have had any issue with Darktrace, I've been able to contact an engineer through their support desk, and I have always had a very speedy response. Even when the issue has been caused by something outside of the Darktrace devices, they have still been very keen to try to help and identify what the problem was. The customer portal also has a large number of videos and guides that you can use to educate yourself on the product

It has been difficult at sometimes, the support people at one point told me that they couldn't tell me information about OfficeScan because it was knowledge that was passed down from engineer to engineer. The issue was that if you used the msi for the install any further installs would require the msi to have the same exact name or else the install fails and corrupts the install. This information is not listed anywhere on trends website. Support kept trying to get me to use the exe for installs instead, but we use SCCM and msi's work better. We had to write a script to come up with a solution so that we could uninstall the software and install the new software. Trend did provide the technical expertise to help with the script and had us work with one of the developers in order to resolve that issue. So they did fix their screw up but it took a while and several complaints.

I have evaluated several endpoint security products over the years, but Trend Micro consistently lands in the Gartner's magic quadrant of best companies in this space, reviews well, and, most tellingly, I have had great success with their products. Every iteration brings improvements in ease of use and advancements in protection

  • Increased employee efficiency is definitely one of the main reasons for using this product. A lot of valuable business hours can be saved by having this product as we all know that fixing virus issues involves more than technical expertise and takes a lot of time.
  • If the employee efficiency improves then any employee facing the customer will have a much better impact and will automatically improve customer service. Having a computer in good condition is going to have a better customer service and it will also help to meet deadlines.
  • The only negative impact I would say that it does affect other VPN agents (which is mandatory for certain client applications or accessing the client network) once the Trend Micro agent gets a version upgrade. On the other hand if the agents are not upgraded from time to time it may affect Trend Micro agents' functionality.
