Databricks Lakehouse Platform

[Databricks Lakehouse Platform (Unified Analytics Platform)] makes the power of Spark accessible. Databricks's proactive and customer-centric service. It is a highly adaptable solution for data engineering, data science, and AI. Load times are not consistent and no ability to restrict data access to specific users or groups.

Tableau Desktop

Tableau's flexibility in data sources and data visualization has proven invaluable in our organization. We use data from multiple sources to create a new dataset. Flat files containing my information are accessible to a wide range of people. The scripting language and R open-source statistical analysis provide many capabilities. My files are mostly in flat format and are being shared among some different individuals. Easy-to-understand for executives, data is separated into sections.

Pros

Databricks Lakehouse Platform

  • Process raw data in One Lake (S3) env to relational tables and views
  • Share notebooks with our business analysts so that they can use the queries and generate value out of the data
  • Try out PySpark and Spark SQL queries on raw data before using them in our Spark jobs
  • Modern day ETL operations made easy using Databricks. Provide access mechanism for different set of customers

  • The Visualizations graphics are really good and the color options help in designing attractive charts. They help to convey more information and can be made interactive.
  • You can add filters with offer you to plug and play with values and understand different outcomes.
  • You can drag and drop options while creating charts and dashboards. also it is a very fluid layout.

Cons

Databricks Lakehouse Platform

  • Better Localized Testing
  • When they were primarily OSS Spark; it was easier to test/manage releases versus the newer DB Runtime. Wish there was more configuration in Runtime less pick a version.
  • Graphing Support went non-existent; when it was one of their compelling general engine.

Tableau Desktop

  • Formatting the data to work correctly in graphical presentations can be time consuming
  • Daily data extracts can run slowly depending on how much data is required and the source of the data
  • The desktop version is required for advanced functionality, editing on [the] Tableau server allows only limited features

Our use of Tableau Desktop is still fairly low, and will continue over time. The only real concern is around cost of the licenses, and I have mentioned this to Tableau and fully expect the development of more sensible models for our industry. This will remove any impediment to expansion of our use.

Because it is an amazing platform for designing experiments and delivering a deep dive analysis that requires execution of highly complex queries, as well as it allows to share the information and insights across the company with their shared workspaces, while keeping it secured.

in terms of graph generation and interaction it could improve their UI and UX

I personally that Tableau Desktop is very easy to learn. Especially the basics are quite easy and one can master the skills in no time. Once you go beyond the basics, there is a learning curve and can be climbed with practice. For doing complex and incorporated tasks, i recommend getting help -- books, tutorials, blogs, youtube videos etc. I do that it will perform great and with ease for simpler and complex projects

When used as a stand-alone tool, Tableau Desktop has unlimited uptime, which is always nice. When used in conjunction with Tableau Server, this tool has as much uptime as your server admins are willing to give it. All in all, I've never had an issue with Tableau's availability.

Tableau Desktop's performance is solid. You can really dig into a large dataset in the form of a spreadsheet, and it exhibits similarly good performance when accessing a moderately sized Oracle database. I noticed that with Tableau Desktop 9.3, the performance using a spreadsheet started to slow around 75K rows by about 60 columns. This was easily remedied by creating an extract and pushing it to Tableau Server, where performance went to lightning fast

Tableau support team took their own time to reach out with their solution. However, Tableau online community forums where many visitors and user are ready to lend a hand to others and share their experiences provide support and help in any issues encounter during the development phase.

It is admittedly hard to train a group of people with disparate levels of ability coming in, but the software is so easy to use that this is not a huge problem; anyone who can follow simple instructions can catch up pretty quickly.

Again, training is the key and the company provides a lot of example videos that will help users discover use cases that will greatly assist their creation of original visualizations. As with any new software tool, productivity will decline for a period. In the case of Tableau, the decline period is short and the later gains are well worth it.

Alternatives Considered

Databricks Lakehouse Platform

Databricks has a much better edge than Synapse in hundred different ways. Databricks has Photon engine, faster available release in cloud and databricks does not run on Open source spark version so better optimization, better performance and better agility and all kind of performance boost can be achieved in Databricks rather Open source synapse spark

If we do not have legacy tools which have already been set up, I would switch the visualization method to open source software via PyCharm, Atom, and Visual Studio IDE. These IDEs cannot directly help you to visualize the data but you can use many python packages to do so through these IDEs.

Tableau Desktop's scaleability is really limited to the scale of your back-end data systems. If you want to pull down an extract and work quickly in-memory, in my application it scaled to a few tens of millions of rows using the in-memory engine. But it's really only limited by your back-end data store if you have or are willing to invest in an optimized SQL store or purpose-built query engine like Veritca or Netezza or something similar.

  • Machine learning is a very new concept and not many universities offer to teach it. My school and a few others have been utilizing Databricks as one of the tools to teach and learn machine learning. By doing this, my university is creating a strong future workforce for the job market.

Tableau Desktop

  • Tableau was acquired years ago, and has provided good value with the content created.
  • Ongoing maintenance costs for the platform, both to maintain desktop and server licensing has made the continuing value questionable when compared to other offerings in the marketplace.
  • Users have largely been satisfied with the content, but not with the overall performance. This is due to a combination of factors including the performance of the Tableau engines as well as development deficiencies.
