Db2 Warehouse on Cloud

Db2 is not a solution that I recommend. We have a lot of experience and we are not satisfied with the product or the support that we received. Because of the way our environment works, serving branches, it becomes a challenge to satisfy the customers or users.

RavenDB

RavenDB is our default OLTP database for new projects - there have to be specific requirements from our customers to not use it. It is a very versatile tool that we can incorporate in many situations.
Granted, we haven't used RavenDB in projects where we have several hundreds of millions or even billions of documents. However, we never had any issues with the performance so far (and we have databases that gather about a few GBs of data in a few months). It might be that RavenDB is also not the best thing for modeling a data warehouse (OLAP) as it is relatively cumbersome to create custom indexes.

Pros

Db2 Warehouse on Cloud

  • You can size dashDB to your current needs and expand its capability later on as the needed.
  • I like the way dashDB allow for connecting to the cloud that my network engineer to set things up quickly.
  • IBM dashDB's ability to store and provide fast access to data both on-premise and in the cloud makes it a real winner for me.

RavenDB

  • The C# client makes using RavenDB feel like a natural part of the C# language.
  • Support is top notch! Even using free support you get speedy replies from engineers responsible for development of the DB engine.
  • The hosted cloud product is reasonably priced and makes it easy to deploy a resilient cluster with automatic backups.

Cons

Db2 Warehouse on Cloud

  • We have been facing some challenges with Db2 when scaling up the operations in terms of availability. It becomes a single point of failure and it pollutes the whole system, leaving us challenges in serving the traffic. This is the reason that we are considering migrating to Oracle.
  • Scalability has been a problem area. We have traffic on the order of gigabytes per second and it impacts our queries and responses a lot. Considering the volume that we have, it manifests itself into a multitude of issues.
  • We have dealt with technical support on several occasions. Whenever we run into issues, the specialist team is involved and the resolution cycle is stretched. We have to rely on make-shift solutions and the issues keep recurring. Ultimately, the product itself has challenges and we are not currently satisfied with the support, either.

RavenDB

  • The documentation is very good, but it's sometimes hard to find the topic I'm looking for.
  • Updating references is done manually. It would be nice if there was a feature to help with that. I'm not sure that's even possible though.

We've had an excellent experience using RavenDB. Internally we are testing the newer features in 5.0 such as time series, which will effect the con specified previously dependent on the real world performance. We foresee that BattleCrate will continue to use RavenDB as we grow.

RavenDB is easy to use and provides a very friendly and intuitive management tool. We can now map documents with indexes, transform unstructured data into JSON format and analyze text and spatial data in real-time. With an array of functional features like data visualization, SNMP monitoring, automated data backup, it is seamlessly helping us in managing databases' performance and generating custom reports.

Had a question that was answered in minutes. Never used a NoSQL approach before, but was able to be proficient in a matter of hours. Easy to read API Documentation. 5 out 5 support in book, I have never once ran into an issue that wasn't quickly solved by either their support team or myself doing a quick search online.

Alternatives Considered

Db2 Warehouse on Cloud

IBM dashDB stacks up well against both on-premise (SQL Server and DB2), but it was a tough choice to go with over AzureDB. Ultimately, the deep discount by IBM led us to go with dashDB with the understanding that we could back out of the technology at a later date.

RavenDB

The given alternatives are also powerful and really good noSQL databases but the highest availability of RavenDB allows me/us to know it a lot better.RavenDB is encrypted by default wherever we use it in production and it has a high level of documents compression.

RavenDB

  • RavenDB has saved my customers a lot of money with their cloud services' tiered model. The database is able to grow with the project/company and can start out small at a low cost.
  • RavenDB is free for three nodes and three CPUs, which makes it great for development scenarios. You're able to start rapidly building applications without having to worry about licensing.
  • Scaling out has allowed us to use three small cloud servers when starting out and get the performance and throughput of a single larger server.
